Meet the breeder

I'm Maria H., the breeder behind 1880 Lagotto located in Minster, OH. Our dogs live in home with us on a working family farm and puppies are raised around small children. The farmhouse was built in 1880 hence the name! We utilize puppy culture methods to create confident, family friendly dogs. I always aim to produce show quality dogs with a large focus on temperament.

Q. & A. with Maria

  • Why did you start breeding?

I've always had an interest in breeding and Lagotti proved to check all the boxes in what we were looking for in a dog! We are a homeschool family which gives me the ability to spend lots of time at home with the puppies and also for the kids to pitch in and help where they can.
  • What makes your program special?

We live on a working farm and also have a family of 5 young children. So in addition to puppy culture this presents extra desensitization opportunities at an early age. I raise my dogs with a holistic approach and expose them to the sights and sounds of a household and the outdoors from the start!
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

We had never heard of Lagotto's when we started the search for our new addition to the family. We looked at several breeds but there are not that many Lagottos out there. We're so grateful Maria was so knowledgeable and willing to share that knowledge with us. The whole process was comfortable and Maria helped us get set up for our new puppy helping us get set up for success with our puppy. As for the puppy, he's turned out to be the perfect dog for our family so Maria did a great job putting us together. He's healthy, the playful dog our son wanted, a lapdog when our daughter is sad. He's my exercise companion, reminding everyday to get out there and do something (with him). A quick learner who wants to do the right thing, his temperament is perfect. Just a great, happy dog. Thank you to Maria (and Rue).

We have been so pleased with our experience and relationship with 1880 Lagotto. From the very start, when we were inquiring, Maria was so helpful and thorough about the breed, her breeding experience, her dogs, as well as learning about us. Once the puppies were born, we received frequent updates and pictures. We were impressed with the training and exposure that was happening from the very start and it really made a difference once we brought Gitchi home. The loving home environment exposed him to new sights, sounds, and people of all ages. He loves being around people, especially children. And, of course, every dog he wants to be his best pal. While we chose to have him as a family dog, we have also been very pleased with his ability in training and learning new things. He loves obstacle courses, swimming, and his favorite, retrieving (especially balls). 1880's philosophy with the training of Puppy Culture, provided him with a very solid foundation that we have been able to build upon. Maria takes the time to know the puppies and they are given a personality test which she then can match them with their people. Gitchi has been a perfect match and we couldn't be happier. In addition, Maria has always been available to answer and questions as well as sharing the joy Gitchi has/is providing us. We would definitely stay with Maria for future puppies.
