I'm Lisa H., the breeder behind Alto Mare PWDs located in Orem, UT. As PWD preservation breeders we only breed to preserve the qualities that make the breed extraordinary
It’s our goal to help ensure the future of the Portuguese Water Dog by responsibly breeding our exceptional dogs. We dearly love this breed and are proud to be doing our part as a PWD breeder.
Q. & A. with Lisa
Why did you start breeding?
I was a professional dog trainer, handler and agent.
A client with a Bichon started investigating the breed then after 3 years got his first, my first PWD client, she eventually became my foundation female.
In the early eighties, there were less than a thousand registered Portuguese Water Dogs in the US.
What makes your program special?
Over 35 years of preservation breeding program. Every litter has specific goals Aiming for excellence. m
Most are placed as pet, but a couple of pups that meet our goal may be Re evaluated After they mature and then if they turn out excellent will be shown, health tested and bred to carry those traits to assure the next generation also has those amazing qualities that make this breed great!
What are the different breed coat colors in your program?
Our puppies include black, white, and brown. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home and guardian homes.

Hip Dysplasia
Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.
Eye Certification (CAER, registered with OFA)
Eye testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide range of hereditary eye illnesses including retinal dysplasia, lens luxation, and glaucoma, which can cause impared vision or blindness.
Microphthalmia Syndrome (PES), DNA Profile, Wisdom Panel, DNA Disease Panel, Early Onset Progressive Retinal Atrophy (EOPRA), PRA, Rod-Cone Degeneration (PRA-prcd), Juvenile Dilated Cardiomyopathy
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
