Q. & A. with Gabriel
Why did you start breeding?
At Avon’s Braque Francais (ABF) Kennels, our journey into breeding began with a simple search for a rare and versatile hunting dog. While researching, I came across an article featuring Brad Boisen of Plankinton, South Dakota, who spoke passionately about his Braque Francais Pyrenean hunting dogs. He described how ferocious and focused they are in the field yet gentle and loyal in the home. His words resonated deeply, and a few days later I gave Brad a call.
That call was the start of everything—Brad was friendly, knowledgeable, and incredibly helpful, guiding me in the right direction to begin my own breeding journey. From there, I committed myself to learning, raising, and sharing this exceptional breed with others who value both their hunting ability and family companionship.
What makes your program special?
1. Careful, Small-Scale Breeding
• We breed on a limited basis, which allows us to give each litter and every puppy the time, attention, and socialization they deserve.
• Quality is our focus, not quantity.
2. Strong Bloodlines & Proven Pairings
• Our foundation lines began with Chequamegon’s Queen Frances, carefully selected for her exceptional field drive and family temperament.
• Each pairing is planned with intention to preserve and enhance the best traits of the Braque Francais Pyrenean.
3. Field & Family Balance
• Our dogs are ferocious hunters in the field—bird-focused, athletic, and eager to work.
• Yet they are equally known for being gentle, affectionate, and calm in the home, making them perfect family companions.
4. Early Socialization & Training
• Puppies are raised in a family environment, with exposure to children, household life, and outdoor experiences.
• This gives them a confident, well-adjusted foundation for both hunting and family life.
5. Commitment to Health
• All dogs receive proper veterinary care, balanced nutrition, and health screenings.
• Our goal is to ensure long, healthy lives for every puppy we produce.
6. Passion for the Breed
• My journey began with a deep admiration for this rare breed after learning from established breeders like Brad Boisen of South Dakota.
• That passion has grown into a commitment to protect, preserve, and promote the Braque Francais Pyrenean in the United States.
What are the different breed coat colors in your program?
Our puppies are white and chestnut. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
