Meet the breeder

I'm Amy E., the breeder behind Chicks and Hounds Ranch located in Needville, TX. We're a family-run kennel dedicated to preserving the Black and Tan Coonhound through careful, ethical, and intentional breeding. Our mission is to uphold the breed standard with sound structure, stable temperament, and natural working ability. Our hounds are fully health tested and actively shown in conformation, bred to excel in the field, the ring, and as loyal companions at home.

Q. & A. with Amy

  • Why did you start breeding?

I became involved in breeding through a passion for preserving and protecting my chosen breed. My focus is on ethical practices—prioritizing health testing, structure, and temperament—to ensure each generation upholds the breed standard while remaining versatile companions in the ring, field, and home.
  • What makes your program special?

Our program stands out because we focus on the complete dog—sound structure, stable temperament, and proven working ability. We fully health test, show in conformation, and emphasize versatility, producing hounds that excel in the field, the ring, and as devoted family companions.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies are black and tan. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

Each puppy comes from fully health-tested parents, is raised in our home with early socialization, and receives age-appropriate veterinary care, microchipping, and deworming. We provide lifetime breeder support and take pride in matching each puppy with the right family. A non-refundable deposit secures your puppy on our waitlist. Deposits demonstrate your commitment and allow us to reserve a puppy from a specific litter. Breeder-Reported Testing

Excellent level

Chicks and Hounds Ranch reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Black and Tan Coonhounds.

  • Hip Dysplasia

Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.

  • Elbow Dysplasia (rDVM, not registered)

Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.

  • Eye Certification (CAER, registered with OFA)

Eye testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide range of hereditary eye illnesses including retinal dysplasia, lens luxation, and glaucoma, which can cause impared vision or blindness.

  • Cardiac Evaluation (registered with OFA)

Heart testing reduces the chance of passing down congenital heart disease, which can cause a range of symptoms ranging from trouble exercising to heart failure.

  • Vet Wellness Exam

A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.

Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
