Meet the breeder

I'm Lori S., the breeder behind Darkfire Harriers located in Waxhaw, NC. Darkfire Harriers breed solely to preserve this breed, of which there are fewer than 500 in the US and probably fewer than 7,000 worldwide. Any dog we breed from will have been extensively health and temperament tested, and they will be AKC champions. Puppies to select homes only.

Q. & A. with Lori

  • Why did you start breeding?

At Darkfire, we breed solely to preserve this rare and ancient breed. There are fewer than 500 Harriers in the US; and probably fewer than 7,000 in the world. Protecting and preserving rare breeds is a serious responsibility; especially in a world where many wonderful dogs are in shelters and rescues hoping for good home. We work extensively with rescue, and refer many potential homes to them.
  • What makes your program special?

We breed strictly to the AKC standard, and ONLY dogs with the necessary health clearances and which are AKC champions. We also extensively assess our dogs for temperament and suitability. The Harrier should NEVER fail to get along with other dogs; and should always be a wonderful family pet. Our particular Harriers are also very quiet and are not barkers. We work with our families for life.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies are black white and tan. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

“Puppies are not released until 8 weeks or older. They will have been started on their shots, will be microchipped, and AKC registered. A deposit will hold your place on the list for puppies in upcoming litters. If we do not have a litter coming within 6 months, we will not take deposits. A deposit does not guarantee a puppy.”
