Meet the breeder

I'm Heather J., the breeder behind English Bench Elkhounds located in Dorchester, IA. As conscientious breeders, we are proud of the loving, smart, beautiful, and sound puppies we’re able to provide for others. The loyalty and loving disposition of this breed are simply the best! We put a great deal of effort into raising our litters to ensure our puppy families will have the best experience raising their new family members.

Q. & A. with Heather

  • Why did you start breeding?

We lost our Elkhound, Thor in 2019 to cancer. It was difficult to find a quality Norwegian Elkhound in our area. We ended up finding a pair (a few months apart) and did some research on genetics, breeding practices, and decided to test our dogs and breed them to make these beloved dogs available locally.
  • What makes your program special?

Our dam and sire are our family pets. We are not breeding large numbers and certainly are not making a huge profit. We love the breed and wanted to provide a quality healthy dog for others to love.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies are silver gray and black. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

Price

Puppy prices include a $375 refundable deposit and between $375 - $625 final payment, before taxes & fees.

“Refundable if you change your mind for any reason prior to picking up your puppy and paying in full. A $200 rehoming fee applies to returning your pup for ANY reason within 60 days after pick up. Beyond the 60 day return period we will support you in rehoming but cannot guarantee our ability to rehome for you. While we do not wish for our puppies to end up in shelters, we are also not interested in becoming one. Our policy is meant to ensure that our puppies go to responsible buyers that understand the unique needs of an Elkhound and to discourage “trial periods” that can be detrimental to puppy’s development. We do our very best to place puppies in perfect forever homes and don’t anticipate our policies will cause any undo harm.”

Contract & health guarantee

Heather may provide a written contract or health guarantee when you purchase a puppy. This helps protect both you and your breeder, ensuring that you both have a clear understanding of the terms of your puppy purchase. If Heather offers a contract or guarantee, the details will be personalized by them. If you have any questions or want to know more, don’t hesitate to reach out to Heather directly.
