I'm Leona F., the breeder behind Forestwood Farms Great Pyrenees located in Cedar City, UT. We breed our dogs with the goal of bettering the breed; focusing on a temperament that is calm yet aware, excellent health by performing all breed related testing and more, and breeding for the structure in the breed standard. We believe a good dog must have all 3 parts to be able to be the best they can be whether it be a Livestock Guardian, Companion/Pet, Therapy/ Service, or Show/Breeding Dog.
Q. & A. with Leona
Why did you start breeding?
I love this breed very much. I decided after a few years of owning Great Pyrenees, and much research, I wanted to breed them. I got my first girl in 2018. I read and studies much and decided to start showing in conformation. I wanted to improve the breed, be the breeder I had looked for, and help others be able to have a well bred Great Pyr.
What makes your program special?
Much planning and a lot of thought goes into every breeding. Great care is taken to make sure the mom is in excellent health. All health testing is completed and the parents are shown in conformation before breeding. Mom only has between 1-3 litters depending on my goals. From the time the puppies arrive they are well loved and started in puppy culture. They are with mom almost till they leave and are allowed to nurse as long as mom would like usually 8-10 weeks. They are introduced to something new everyday according their development. We introduce house hold sounds, grooming, nail trimming, they go out side and are on all types of surfaces. They are introduced to the chickens, cats, dogs, and cows, and socialized with people and go out in the community after vaccines. They are seen by a vet around 7-8 weeks for first vaccines and a health check. They spend time with mom to learn from her. They are introduced to basic training. They go home with you with go home package to make the transition to your home as smooth as possible. We strive to make a good foundation for you to build on.
What are the different breed coat colors in your program?
Our puppies include white and badger and white. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.

Forestwood Farms Great Pyrenees reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Great Pyrenees.
Hip Dysplasia
Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.
Eye Certification (CAER, registered with OFA)
Eye testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide range of hereditary eye illnesses including retinal dysplasia, lens luxation, and glaucoma, which can cause impared vision or blindness.
Cardiac Evaluation (registered with OFA)
Heart testing reduces the chance of passing down congenital heart disease, which can cause a range of symptoms ranging from trouble exercising to heart failure.
Patellar Luxation
Knee testing reduces the chance of passing down Patellar Luxation, which results in the kneecap becoming displaced or dislocated and can cause mild to severe joint pain.
Thyroid (Autoimmune Thyroiditis, registered with OFA)
A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.

We adopted our sweet little boy “Chunk” from Leona, and he has been absolutely incredible! From day one, he’s loved our kids and fit right into our family as if he’s always been here. It’s clear that Leona truly cares about her puppies and raises them with love and attention. Even after the adoption, she has continued to be an amazing resource—always quick to respond to any questions or concerns we have. We couldn’t be happier and highly recommend getting your pup from Leona!
