Our priorities for producing dogs are temperament, health, and versatility.
Q. & A. with Talena, Emily, and Dobbs
Why did you start breeding?
Over the five years of being in the breed, we have absorbed, studied, and listened to the breeding practices shared by many of our more experienced peers, have researched updating information pertaining to the health and wellbeing of Silkens, and have actively trained, titled, and health tested our own Silkens in preparation for our first litter. We currently have plans for a Spring 2025 litter.
What makes your program special?
We perform health testing to the standards recommended by our breed club in the OFA CHIC program– but we also look for opportunities to go beyond those recommendations when able. We offer a breeding program that prioritizes sweet and solid Silken temperaments, and a versatility to perform in a variety of activities, from conformation shows to various performance sports.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.

Breeder-Reported Testing
Excellent level
Heathen Hounds reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Silken Windhounds.
Eye Certification (CAER, registered with OFA)
Eye testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide range of hereditary eye illnesses including retinal dysplasia, lens luxation, and glaucoma, which can cause impared vision or blindness.
Cardiac Evaluation (registered with OFA)
Heart testing reduces the chance of passing down congenital heart disease, which can cause a range of symptoms ranging from trouble exercising to heart failure.
Thyroid (Autoimmune Thyroiditis, registered with OFA)
A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.
DNA Disease Panel, Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA), Multiple Drug Sensitivity (MDR1)
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
