I'm Hannah L., the breeder behind Heritage Mountain Ranch located in North Fork, CA. We offer well-tempered dogs with foundations that nurture curiosity, drive, and obedience. We are conscientious in our breeding practices, and we breed for health, temperament, and ability. We want our dogs to be able to succeed wherever they are needed, as well as to thrive in their homes with their families.
Q. & A. with Hannah
Why did you start breeding?
Years ago we had our lovely Lily, who lived to be 13! So many of our friends up here wanted guardians like her and they were hard to find. We were also moving to 40 acres in North Fork with only one Pyr to guard. She wasn’t our first Pyr, but our only at the time. I’d bred collies many years before. So we acquired our Patrick and kept Whisper from their litter. We’ve had 5 Pyrs at one time here and that’s a good number.
What makes your program special?
We breed for color, that is unique. Sometimes our dogs retain it as adults. In purebred dogs there is no genetic diversity, which is why you get genetic weaknesses showing up like hip and elbow problems. Genetic problems are always recessive, so can be strengthened with any differences in breed traits. The fact dogs are purebred rules out diversity. So we look for color and coat differences. They are still within the breed standard, of course. We also breed for good personality and temperament and we breed rarely. Our litter this year is our first in three years.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.

Program update on 10 Apr. •
Pups just started taking first steps today. So cute to see them walking around on their short little legs. Not even three weeks old and they are getting around beautifully!

Today the pups went for their veterinary exams. So very many years ago, I had lots of helpers, but today, just Hannah and mom wrangled all the pups along the windy roads to our old veterinarian in Mariposa. We went there faithfully while living in Coarsegold (All Creatures Veterinary), but the last six years, after moving to North Fork, we’ve made the trek to Auberry. Even windier roads, but a shorter trip for our pets. But Dr. Sally is retiring-so we went back to our wonderful Dr. Wise.
Dr. Wise pulled up this photo on her screen from almost 15 years ago. It’s on her web page too. That’s Hannah on the left who is now a school teacher and owner of two of our dogs!
All pups checked out with everything wonderful! Dr. Wise commented on their great conformation and good health. She was very impressed. They got shots and heartworm. No pics today as their tummies did not handle the trip well and they were happy to be home!! Still, they were all wagging with the vet techs and Dr. Wise. Great temperaments!

Breeder-Reported Testing
Good level
Heritage Mountain Ranch reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Great Pyrenees.
Hip Dysplasia
Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.
