I'm Joyce S., the breeder behind Joyce Shively located in Ashville, OH. We breed well-tempered, healthy dogs, and healthy puppies.
Our puppies have gone to hunting homes, therapy dogs and pets.
We currently have 3 females in our program. All our dogs are solid colored, 6 solid liver, 3 solid black. People are amazed to see a solid color, let alone 9 of them in one home.
We prefer that new owners come to pick up their puppy. That way they can not only see where puppy has lived, but can see 4 generations at one time and their different personalities.
If you are not quite sure whether a GSP is right for you, please check out a YouTube video by Stonnie Dennis (permission received) titled "German Shorthair Pointer, Is It right for you?" He has wonderful pointers, no pun intended, and ideas for folks in an urban setting and who do not use their new pup for hunting.
If you decide a gsp is not for you, he has many videos on other breeds as well.
Q. & A. with Joyce
Why did you start breeding?
We had so many people comment on how they loved the coloring of our first liver girl, we decided to start breeding. After searching we found the right male to begin.
What makes your program special?
We like to breed solid to solid to have a better chance of having a solid puppy born. Many people have said how hard it is to find solid GSPs.
What are the different breed coat colors in your program?
Our puppies include liver and black. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.

Hunter, dad
German Shorthaired Pointer
About Hunter
Hunter is great either in bird field or on couch with is.
Daisy, mom
German Shorthaired Pointer
About Daisy

Browning, mom
German Shorthaired Pointer
About Browning
We have recently retired Browning from our breeding program. She is Kelli's mother.
Trapper, dad
German Shorthaired Pointer
About Trapper
Trapper is an awesome dog who excels at anything you want him to do. Field work - no official training and he is pointing and retrieving birds like a pro. With hardly any obedience training, I videoed 2 rally runs during 2021 and scored 97 on both of them.
He loves it when he has something to do for us.
Kelli, mom
German Shorthaired Pointer
About Kelli
At 10 months old, we took Kelli to a NAVHDA trial and she took Prize 1 with perfect score of 112. She loves field work.
Joyce Shively reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for German Shorthaired Pointers.
Hip Dysplasia
Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.
Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)
Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.
Canine Good Citizen (CGC)
A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.
DNA Profile
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).

It has been a pleasure working with Ed and Joyce throughout this process. The invited us out to the farm and spent a significant amount of time with my family to help us get set up and ready to receive our puppy!
The experience and knowledge they shared with us has been crucial in us adjusting to life with our puppy (Lucy).
Lucy is 5 months old today and has been and amazing addition to our family.

The experience where Winnie came from was an awesome one. We got a little bit of a tour of the property and it was just great. We were updated constantly and it was just a better experience than I can hope for.
Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
