Meet the breeder

I'm Heather L., the breeder behind Landseers of the Connecticut River located in East Longmeadow, MA. All of our puppies are bred, raised, and loved indoors to produce happy, healthy pets. With DLC registration, you know that the parent dogs have been carefully selected for health characteristics, such as hips, elbows and shoulders, and avoiding genetic diseases, as well as a low coefficient of inbreeding.

Q. & A. with Heather

  • Why did you start breeding?

I've been breeding farm animals for 16 years, beginning with chickens, and then ducks, goats, rabbits, and sheep. I thank 4-H for teaching my family the principles of responsible quality breeding.
  • What makes your program special?

This is our first litter, but I have been mentored by an experienced breeder, Janet Thurle, of Pacific Seaport Landseers.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies are white and black. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

Breeder-Reported Testing

Great level

Landseers of the Connecticut River reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Landseer (European Continental Type)s.

  • Hip Dysplasia

Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.

  • Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)

Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.

  • Cardiac Evaluation (rDVM, not registered with OFA)

Heart testing reduces the chance of passing down congenital heart disease, which can cause a range of symptoms ranging from trouble exercising to heart failure.

  • Shoulder Osteochondrosis

A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.

  • DNA Disease Panel

Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).

Heather and David were wonderful to work with, answering all and any questions, even agreeing to set up a Zoom to meet our Greta before bringing her home. Greta is a big goofy girl and everyone who meets her always comments on how big, sweet, and soft she is!

Heather and david were very professional and knowledgeable. They responded immediately to all of my questions and provided everything we requested from photographs to videos to a variety of documentation. They made the process across country seamless. I was very pleased.

Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
