I'm Paula S., the breeder behind Lukehaven Connecticut Icelandic Sheepdogs located in New Hartford, CT. All information about our program and our dogs can be found here: Lukehaven-Icelandic-Sheepdogs. At Lukehaven Icelandic Sheepdogs we breed for four pillars: health, sound structure, stable temperament, and genetic diversity. Yet our responsibility does not end with DNA and vet checks. We view every placement as the start of a lifelong partnership—one grounded in a shared commitment to environmental stewardship, inclusivity, and evidence-based care. Breeding exceptional puppies means more than producing beautiful dogs; it means building a community that honors the rare, heritage status of the Icelandic Sheepdog. We promise to remain a mentor and resource to each owner for the dog’s entire life, celebrating triumphs and providing support whenever challenges arise. Because that ongoing relationship is so important, we place puppies only with homes whose core values complement our own: Respect & Inclusivity – treating every person and animal with dignity. Environmental Stewardship – making choices that preserve the planet our herding breed depends on. Evidence-Based Responsibility – trusting science, veterinary best practice, breeder expertise and ethical training methods. Social Responsibility – contributing positively to local and global communities. We recognize that loving dog owners come from many walks of life, but homes advocating policies or behaviors that undermine compassion, justice, or environmental care fall outside our placement criteria. This standard is value-based rather than partisan: applicants of any political persuasion are welcome so long as their actions and attitudes reflect empathy, unity, diversity, inclusion and respect for the only planet we have to inhabit. Because we stay involved as mentors, resources, and—even years later—part of our puppy owners’ extended family, misaligned core values can compromise both the human–animal bond and the ongoing support we provide. For this reason, placing a puppy in a home whose guardians do not align with our core values is simply not an option for us. By centering kindness, inclusivity, and responsible citizenship in every decision we make, Lukehaven Icelandic Sheepdogs ensures that each puppy enters not just a house, but a home where both dog and family thrive together—bound by shared respect for one another, for our communities, and for the environment. If these principles and values resonate with you, we invite you to complete the Gooddog screening puppy application. If they do not, we appreciate your interest in Icelandic Sheepdogs and encourage you to explore other responsible breeders better aligned with your goals.

About Elsa
Hi there! I’m Lukehaven Safir Elsa Freyjasdottir Of Windrock—though “Elsa” works just fine—and I’m delighted to share my story from my own paws. I’m truly one-of-a-kind: the proud daughter of GCH CH Lukehaven Freyja Of Isneista, born November 17, 2022, and lovingly co-owned by my three moms—Cari, Paula, and Loren. As the only girl in a bustling litter of five, I spent my first 9–10 weeks nestled on Paula’s Connecticut farm. Paula—who brings thirty years of marketing savvy to everything she does—was my first mom and taught me that life is all about curiosity and connection. When I was ready for my next chapter, I trotted off to New York to live with Cari. Cari—founder of Red Horse Rescue and renowned horse trainer for film, commercials and photo shoots including HBO, Apple TV, and Beyoncé—quickly became my “heart person.” Under her gentle guidance, I blossomed: she socialized me with her Icelandic Sheepdogs and many strangers visiting the farm, introduced me to the world of horse training for film (I learned “on-mark” so I’m always camera-ready!), and—best of all—helped me earn my BCAT title in late 2024 with a few speedy runs that had us both cheering. But agility? That’s my true passion. In December 2024, Paula started taking me to her CT agility classes and we seriously started training for competition, and every tunnel, jump, and weave pole felt like pure joy. By April 2025, I’d snagged my ACT 1 and ACT 1J titles—and let me tell you, nothing lights me up more than zooming through an obstacle course. Agility is hands-down my favorite thing to do. Meanwhile, Loren—founder of Lukehaven Icelandic Sheepdogs and breeder of my mom Freyja—has been my champion in the conformation ring. She guided me through every show, teaching me how to stack, display fluid motion, and how to tolerate ‘weird’ people looking in my mouth – yuck. While I haven’t hit the championship stage (yet!), I’ve learned a lot such as being calm and focussed in the chaos of the breed ring. In mid-April, my adventure took another exciting turn: Loren’s boy, GCh Tri-Star Hroi Hottur (Roy), became my stud, and I spent four wonderful days and nights with Roy and Loren. Now we’re eagerly awaiting my ultrasound at the end of May to see if I’m expecting my very first litter. Paula is responsible for the whole process – all my health testing—vaccines, nutrition, genetic screens, etc. I feel so cared for! When I’m home on the farm, I love to make everyone laugh with my favorite “joke”—I’ll leap up on tables, islands, or kitchen counters whenever I sense a stray crumb. It’s my cheeky way of saying, “Pass the treats, please!” Yet I’m just as happy curled up beside any of my moms, always alert for visitors, ready to greet new friends, and forever grateful for the bond I share with each of them. Life with three moms, many Icies, and too many horses across CT, NY, and MA is full of love, laughter, and endless adventure. I can’t wait to meet my future puppies, continue my agility journey, and keep bringing joy (and the occasional countertop caper) to everyone I meet. Thanks for following along with my journey! ~Elsa 🐾
