I'm Ellie O., the breeder behind Meliora Drentsche Patrijshonden located in San Diego, CA. Our philosophy is captured in our name - Meliora - a Latin word that means, "Ever Better". We balance health, conformation, temperament, and working ability, with an aim to produce Drents true to the breed's history, and who excel in scenting activities (hunting and/or detection).
Q. & A. with Ellie
Why did you start breeding?
When I found the Drent, and decided I always wanted one in my life, I knew that meant doing my part to contribute back to this rare breed. Meliora was founded based on education, ambassadorship, and preservation of the Drentsche Patrijshond in all facets, from general ownership to competition sports to preservation breeding.
What makes your program special?
We aim to produce Drents that excel in scent-based activities, including real-world hunting, field trials, scent sports, search and rescue, tracking, or any other detection pursuit. Our ideal Drent oozes confidence, independence, and joy for the hunt/search, is cooperative with the handler and pleasant in the home, and has the physical soundness to hold up to long days and difficult terrain.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.

Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)
Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.
Eye Certification (CAER, registered with OFA)
Eye testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide range of hereditary eye illnesses including retinal dysplasia, lens luxation, and glaucoma, which can cause impared vision or blindness.
DNA Disease Panel
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
