Excellent level

Misty Valley Farm reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Great Pyrenees.

  • Hip Dysplasia

Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.

  • Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)

Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.

  • Cardiac Evaluation (registered with OFA)

Heart testing reduces the chance of passing down congenital heart disease, which can cause a range of symptoms ranging from trouble exercising to heart failure.

  • Patellar Luxation

Knee testing reduces the chance of passing down Patellar Luxation, which results in the kneecap becoming displaced or dislocated and can cause mild to severe joint pain.

  • Thyroid (Autoimmune Thyroiditis, registered with OFA)

A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.

  • OFA/CHIC DNA Repository, Neuronal Degeneration (NDG), Chondrodysplasia/Dwarfism, Spinocerebellar Ataxia (SCA), Primary Lens Luxation (PLL), Glanzmann's Thrombasthenia, Great Pyrenees Type, Degenerative Myelopathy (DM; SOD1A), Canine Multifocal Retinopathy (cmr3; BEST1 Exon 10 SNP), DNA Disease Panel

Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).

I have owned many Pyrs in past years, both as working dogs and as house dogs. I was involved in Pyr rescue for many years as well. I have to say Misty Valley Farm does everything right. This is saying alot for this breed in particular. Alot of the dogs we had come through rescue had been acquired from working stock raised in barns. We were often able to rehome them to working farms. They were good dogs, but that early socialization that a puppy needs to really be a family dog is crucial for a Great Pyrenees. At Misty Valley the pups are born in the family home and handled and loved from day one. Paul was incredibly helpful and competent in helping us find the right pup in the litter for our family. Eventually steering us away from the male pup we initially put a deposit for a female whose temperament would be better suited for us. We couldn't be happier with her! She will largely be a house dog with light duties guarding a few chickens. She was a middle of the litter pup, so not too dominant and not too submissive. She is great even at 4 months with our cats and other dog. She listens and is responsive to training. She is very social taking her around town and already has several baristas charmed, receiving pets and pup cups wherever she goes. She has been easy to crate train, which for a Pyr is saying alot. All that said, Misty Valley is a working farm and many of their pups go on to be excellent livestock guardians as well. So regardless of what you have in mind you can trust Paul to give you the right pup for the job. All in all, I can say Misty Valley Farm has just been a delight to work with and I am already thinking about another pup in a few years.

We adopted Phoebe from MistyValley in November of 2023. She is absolutely wonderful. She touches everyone’s heart that meets her. Our children and grandchildren had been obsessed. When my daughter lost her dog in the summer she had been heartbroken and bonded with Phoebe even more. We could not think of giving her up but thought she should consider adopting a puppy, she was afraid a new puppy would never be the same as Phoebe. Luckily at the time Misty Valley was expecting litters and then had puppies available. My daughter found her puppy and it has been a dream. The family and all the fur babies in the family get along wonderfully. These Great Pyrenees have all the best traits for the family and know when to protect and know when to comfort. They are just the best. Misty Valley does the best job bringing these pups up and getting ready for their families. The pups adapt to their surroundings immediately and love their whole new family’s, kitties too. I would recommend them whole heartedly, I would never go anywhere else.

I highly recommend Misty Valley Farm! Paul and Angela truly care about their animals and were very easy to work with. Being a first time GP owner, I had a lot of questions. They answered all of my questions about the breed before and after ownership. If you’re looking for a Great Pyrenees, you should consider Misty Valley Farm.

Paul went above and beyond as a Great Pyrenees breeder. He and his wife really care to match each dog with a loving home. I have had 2 other Pyrenees and Newfoundlands, and our new member of our family is absolutely loving, bright, and gives the traditional Pyrenees unconditional love that they can only give. Paul was available for any questions and support needed. Our Pyr puppy has been an absolute joy and we can’t imagine a home without her. Thank you Misty Valley Farm!

Perfect! Our experience with Misty Valley couldn’t have been better. We live in Florida, and Paul drove all the way to South Carolina so we could take our new family member home. Paul and Angela have kept in contact with us during the whole process. They respond promptly to any questions that come up. They honestly care about each one of the puppies they adopt out. We would definitely adopt from Misty valley again!
