Meet the breeder

I'm Shannon T., the breeder behind Mountain Pass Barn located in Troutville, VA. Retired dental hygienist. For more than 20 years we have lived on a small hobby farm in the Appalachian mountains of Virginia raising children, chickens, rabbits, and horses. Now I focus on raising puppies in my home surrounded by family. OFA health testing done on parents ensures health of pups.

Q. & A. with Shannon

  • Why did you start breeding?

I have enjoyed natural farming techniques, sustainable practices and keeping packs, flocks, and herds as soon as I was able to buy my own home, a 9 acre hobby farm, 20 years ago. I have loved animal behavior since I was a young child and envisioned managing a barn as my childhood dream. While my back doesn't allow me to play with larger animals or ride horses anymore I now focus on small breeds.
  • What makes your program special?

DNA and OFA testing of bloodlines for optimal puppy health with OFA's of knees, eyes, heart, some hip, elbow, dentition, and hearing in the dalmatian pups. OFA's are publicly accessible. Born in my bedroom and raised in the central parts of the house allow exposure to cats, cars, big dogs, and more. Vaccines and deworming protocols approved by vets help maintain optimal health of your new puppy.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our Shih Tzu puppies include black, gold, blue and white, black and white, and gold and white. Dalmatian puppies are white and black. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

They live in my home and guardian homes.

Shannon made our first experience dining a puppy a compete joy. She answered all my questions promptly, and her patience, and attention to detail made me feel confident that this was a perfect fit. The puppy arrived precisely on schedule, exactly as described, and in *pristine* condition. She is happy, healthy, mostly housebroken and apparently crate trained, which may be a coincidence… but I’m confident Shannon was working with the litter to ensure the puppies’ transition was as seamless as possible. The care package she sent along with the puppy was comprehensive and even contained an excellent Dalmatian book, consequently promoting literacy for my children ;). The puppy is perfect and I already want to bring another one home from the next litter. :) Ms Pink is now our little Truvy, named for Dolly Parton’s character in Steel Magnolias… Truvy’s Beauty Spot. Thank you to Shannon and family!

I had been searching the Internet for a Shih Tzu puppy for nearly a year when I hit upon Good Dog and Shannon. I wanted to be sure that my future pet was healthy, well-socialized and from a reputable breeder. Shannon is a knowledgeable breeder who gives her mom and pups the best possible environment and care. When it came to selecting a puppy, she provided the information I needed to make the perfect match and went out of her way to make a seamless transition for me and for “Eva.” Now we are home, and Eva’s outgoing and happy nature as well as her robust good health have me in stitches much of the day: hence her new name, Stitch. I’m so thankful to Shannon and Mountain Pass Barn for my adorable new fur baby.
