Meet the breeder

I'm Shirley R., the breeder behind Night Eyes NAIDs located in California. Since 2002, Night Eyes has maintained a robust online presence and is unwavering in its dedication to promoting, preserving, and Protecting the original NAID bloodlines with approved outcrosses. It has also founded the Native American Indian Dog Preservation Program since 1995.

Q. & A. with Shirley

  • Why did you start breeding?

In a prior life, I was involved with breeding and showing Basenji's, Afghan Hounds, and a recently accepted breed called the Alaskan Klee Kai. When I became familiar with the Indian Dog, I knew that NAID preservation would be my forever calling. I am proud to have Cherokee roots and I am honored to contribute to the Native American Indian Dog legacy and join with other kennels to continue the legacy.
  • What makes your program special?

Night Eyes NAIDs has a 10-plus-year breeding plan, and we established the standard for health testing. All of our breeding stock is DNA-health tested. Night Eyes NAIDs health screening includes hip, elbow, heart, and eye exams. We also test each pairing for wolf DNA using the experts at UC Davis. We only pair the best sires and dams and use approved foundational bloodlines. German Shepherd is not used.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

They live in my home and a kennel on my property.
