Meet the breeder

I'm Janet L., the breeder behind Pacific Seaport Landseers located in Port Townsend, WA. I breed healthy European Continental Landseer for Companions and Performance Dogs.

Q. & A. with Janet

  • Why did you start breeding?

I longed for a dog that lived water, enjoyed fetching, and had similarities to the Great Pyrenees. I wanted a beautiful natural breed. I met such a dog while on a camping trip. The rest is history. My breeder of the Landseer has mentored me into the breed and the German Landseer Club, the DLC.
  • What makes your program special?

The ECT is a rare breed in the USA. They are a desirable versatile breed. I have been through the internet educating people about our breed. I am one of two ECT Landseer breeders in the US with traceable backgrounds. My litters are registered with the Deutscher Landseer of Germany. Any dog claiming to be an ECT must have a European or FCI registration to be recognized.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies are white and black. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

Pacific Seaport Landseers reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Landseer (European Continental Type)s.

  • Hip Dysplasia

Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.

  • Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)

Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.

  • Cardiac Evaluation (registered with OFA)

Heart testing reduces the chance of passing down congenital heart disease, which can cause a range of symptoms ranging from trouble exercising to heart failure.

  • Shoulder Osteochondrosis, Brucellosis

A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.

  • Animal Genetics Panel, Cystinuria Type 1A, Newfoundland Type

Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
