Lana M.

Breeder of Great Pyrenees

Meet the breeder

I'm Lana M., the breeder behind Prospect Pyrenees located in Trinidad, CO. You've come to the best of the best. We're a small family-oriented breeder focused on the preservation and love for this majestic noble breed. We're excited and look forward to sharing this journey with you. We take responsibility and dedication in making sure our lines are in fact conforming and producing to the Great Pyrenees breed standard. Our pups are rockstars exemplifying what our breeding program and puppy rearing are all about. We only have a few litters a year concentrating solely on quality not quantity. Our puppies are whelped and raised in our Colorado home in Prospect Canyon on 35 acres, not kennels. They descend only from healthy, large, thickset, strong, regal show AND working line. Our Grand Champion sired and titled Baufland Winter Is Here RI CGC FDC TKP ATT (Rally Intermediate, Trick dog performer, Farm dog Certified, Canine good citizen, and AKC temperament tested) is growing up to be absolutely magnificent. All obtain outstanding temperaments, dreamy expressions, dripping coats, gorgeous manes with true classic and majestic pyr bear heads. You won't find long narrow muzzles, overly flat crocodile skulls, or squinty eyes here! They're proven to be healthy, HUGE and highly intelligent with the BEST breed structure and movement. Our dogs are never over bred and accentuate the desired traits of the GREAT PYRENEES. Resilience, confidence and nurturing guardian qualities are just a few to mention. Our LGDs(livestock guardian dogs)& FGDs(family guardian dogs)do a impressive job guarding over our family, horses and property. The coyote, bear and mountain lion issues are now in the past! I can't tell you enough the comfort we feel having them in our lives. Their loyalty and love goes above and beyond. We're also an affiliate of Jane Killion's Puppy Culture program which represents a gold standard in puppy rearing and early socialization. "THE PROOF IS IN THE PUPPIES" https://shoppuppyculture.com/pages/puppy-culture-1 All our puppies are participants of this program until they go to their forever homes. Please beware of breeders stating their puppies are participants but are NOT. Misty Method of early potty training is started at 2.5 wks. Puppies will also receive a basic introduction to a leash. "OUR PRIORITY IS A SOLID FOUNDATION" We OFFER (not required) upon completion and passing the AKC CGC (Canine Good Citizen) certification with your AKC pup a refund of 200.00. As your breeder it's important that I do what I can to continue to support the growth and development of our pups. Once puppies are born you will get weekly updates, pics & a lifetime of support regarding your new love and future guardian.

Q. & A. with Lana

  • Why did you start breeding?

I've always been an animal lover but there is a few I can truly state that are my passion. My Great Pyrenees are just that. I purchased my first Great Pyrenees as I read up on the breed and knew having my children playing outside and having horses that it could offer protection against the mountain lion, bear, and coyote issues. They were becoming a problem on our 35 acres and bordering property. This wasn't just any breed of a dog as I have had and trained many others throughout the years. This one was entirely different. Majestic, noble, gentle, steady, and with an infinite amount of unconditional love to give yet independent. They were a Pyrfect match for me and our family!
  • What makes your program special?

Our dogs all possess the best of breed standard conformation with soundness and stable temperaments to match. This was no easy task as I'm quite selective in what I like. I've spent time talking with Great Pyrenees breeding mentors researching flaws in pedigrees regarding breeding and genetics focusing on breeding for the best of the breed.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies are white. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

  • Hip Dysplasia

Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.

  • Cardiac Evaluation (registered with OFA)

Heart testing reduces the chance of passing down congenital heart disease, which can cause a range of symptoms ranging from trouble exercising to heart failure.

  • Patellar Luxation

Knee testing reduces the chance of passing down Patellar Luxation, which results in the kneecap becoming displaced or dislocated and can cause mild to severe joint pain.

  • Temperament Test

A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.

  • Multifocal Retinopathy 1 (CMR1), Glanzmann's Thrombasthenia, Great Pyrenees Type, Degenerative Myelopathy (DM; SOD1A)

Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
