Rustyco/Cayenne

Debbi G.

Breeder of Portuguese Water Dogs

Meet the breeder

I'm Debbi G., the breeder behind Rustyco/Cayenne located in Elk Grove, CA. For the past 17 years, my husband, John, and I have been training, grooming, showing, and breeding this intelligent, compassionate, enthusiastic breed. Our first PWD, Emmy, received her AKC Championship and Canine Good Citizen before having two litters. Our second female, Cayenne, just had her first litter and we are looking forward to meeting new families through Cayenne's puppies!

Q. & A. with Debbi

  • Why did you start breeding?

We were introduced to Portuguese Water Dogs by my sister-in-law and brother, Julie and Ty Rust. They have been our mentors for 17 years, guiding us through training, grooming, conformation (dog showing), and breeding, and we use their kennel name RustyCo. Our first Portuguese Water Dog, Emmy, was a show Champion and Canine Good Citizen. We love this breeds' intelligence, earnest need to please, and enthusiasm at work and play. They make wonderfully loyal companions!
  • What makes your program special?

Our Portuguese Water Dogs (as well as the sire) are health tested to reduce the incidence of genetic disease. We are members of the PWD Club of America and the PWD Club of Northern California and follow the breed club standards for health testing. The puppies are raised in our home with the Puppy Culture socialization program and they receive lots of love and attention. We remain friends with our puppy families throughout the dogs' lives and we are thrilled to be able to share this exhilarating breed with others.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.
