Meet the breeder

Q. & A. with Karen Kirby

  • Why did you start breeding?

While attending the Rhode Island School of Design, I met a Portuguese Water Dog and knew that someday I wanted to own one. In 1996, following the unexpected death of my beloved Golden Retriever Bubba, I began searching for a Portuguese Water Dog. At an American Kennel Club dog show at the Houston Astrohall, I met Karen and Bob Arends, who invited me to visit their home to meet their dogs. That's where my love affair with the breed began. I located a breeder with an available male show puppy who became CH Admiral Travis B. Clyde of Ferncliff, bred by Colville and Ann Jackson. The following November the Jackson's male Ch Brieah's Mississippi Gambler "Chance" sired a litter bred by Deborah Zorn and in January Karen brought home her second Portuguese Water Dog, CH Encanto Brio Butterfly Girl, CD AX AXJ CWD CGC HIC TDI GROM.
  • What makes your program special?

My goal is to improve the integrity of the breed while breeding healthy puppies with sound temperaments whether for companions, conformation champions or performance and therapy work. All my puppies are raised with their optimum health in mind and are raised in the heart of my home for the crucial first weeks of life. I pride myself on the socialization and care I dedicate to your puppy from the day it is born.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.
