Meet the breeder

I'm Giene K., the breeder behind Shooting Star Water Dogs located in Monticello, WI. At Shooting Star, we raise happy, healthy, well-socialized puppies with a focus on temperament, structure, and overall health. Our dogs are family, raised in a loving home—not a kennel. We emphasize responsible breeding, early socialization, and thoughtful placements. Health tested and vet checked.

Q. & A. with Giene

  • Why did you start breeding?

Two reasons: 1. I have sat at the kitchen table with countless owners that are going through very hard times with their dogs. I've always though that if their puppy had been raised better, they would not be having all of these behavior issues. 2. I love Portuguese Water Dogs and Lagotti, and want to continue to better the breeds!
  • What makes your program special?

I breed with purpose—focusing on health, temperament, and structure. Our puppies are raised with positive reinforcement, early socialization, and real-world experiences. I do early socialization, microchip, vet check and matchmake with the best families for that pup. I’m committed to ethical breeding, lifelong support for families, and preserving the integrity and versatility of the breeds I love.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our Portuguese Water Dog puppies include brown and white, black and white, black, and brown. Lagotto Romagnolo puppies include white, off-white, and brown roan. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

Getting a puppy from Giene

Giene has been certified by Good Dog’s screening team for responsible and trusted breeding practices. When you’re ready, reach out to ask about the puppies or anything else on your mind. You’ll get to know each other through messaging, phone, or video and pay securely, all on Good Dog.

Giene partners with buyers to find the best match as the puppies develop and their personalities take shape. Typically, matches are finalized when the puppies reach about 7 weeks old.

“One of the questions we receive most often is how puppy selection works - especially when it comes to gender or coat color. I completely understand how easy it is to fall in love with a particular puppy based on photos or to have a favorite color in mind. Puppies are adorable, and it’s natural to picture that one joining your family. That said, coat color is actually the last consideration we make when matching puppies with their homes. Our puppy matchmaking process focuses first and foremost on long-term compatibility between each puppy and their future family. Every litter includes puppies with different temperaments, energy levels, structure, and natural tendencies - and every family has different goals and lifestyles. For example: Families with young children often need a puppy who is especially tolerant and resilient, not necessarily calm, but able to handle the activity and unpredictability that comes with kids. Someone hoping for a jogging or active companion may be best matched with a puppy who is slighter boned, athletic, and well-balanced in both front and rear angulation for long-term soundness. For show homes, we carefully evaluate conformation and structure. Some families are interested in hunting, scent work, or dog sports, which calls for puppies with specific drives and working traits. Because of this, the puppy you are initially drawn to may not always be the puppy that will thrive best in your home - and our goal is to set both the puppy and the family up for lifelong success. My background is in dog behavior and training, which is a big part of why I became a breeder in the first place. Raising puppies is only one piece of the puzzle; thoughtfully placing them is just as important. We spend weeks observing how each puppy develops, interacts, problem-solves, and responds to new experiences before making final matches. When placement day comes, we consider temperament, confidence, resilience, structure, activity level, and your goals as a family. Once those needs are met, we then look at preferences like gender or color whenever possible. Our priority is always the same: the right puppy in the right home - for the best possible future together. Thank you for trusting us with this process and for being open to our guidance. It truly allows us to give every puppy. and every family, the strongest start.”
