I'm Barbara J., the breeder behind Sugarloafer Rat Terriers located in Spokane, WA. Our dogs are bred for health and temperament, with a focus on conformation, prey drive, and athleticism. I am a participant in the Canine Diversity study being conducted by UC Davis. Health testing and diversity in breeding are important to the preservation of the breed.
Q. & A. with Barbara
Why did you start breeding?
My first husband and I became involved in breeding and showing Bulldogs in the late 1960s. We have had dogs from some of the best lines available. My first husband has gone on to be an AKC Bulldog judge.
What makes your program special?
I take great care in selecting mates for our females. We do not breed often, perhaps a year at the most. Our dogs are first and foremost our companions. We do enjoy showing our dogs in conformation as owner handlers. Pups from our program also participate in performance sports.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.

Hip Dysplasia
Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.
Cardiac Evaluation (registered with OFA)
Heart testing reduces the chance of passing down congenital heart disease, which can cause a range of symptoms ranging from trouble exercising to heart failure.
Patellar Luxation
Knee testing reduces the chance of passing down Patellar Luxation, which results in the kneecap becoming displaced or dislocated and can cause mild to severe joint pain.
Legg-Calve-Perthes (OFA)
A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.
PRA, Rod-Cone Degeneration (PRA-prcd), Degenerative Myelopathy (DM; SOD1A), Chondrodystrophy and IVDD Risk (CDDY-IVDD), Primary Lens Luxation (PLL), OFA/CHIC DNA Repository
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
