Q. & A. with Susan

  • Why did you start breeding?

When my children were young—ages 5 to 8—I began looking for a dog we could share as a family. I remembered that my sister had a dog when she was growing up, so I asked her what kind it was. She answer was a Rat Terrier so I went looking for them. Our first dog was Garrets Rose for my son. This was before the internet was part of everyday life, so my search began the old-fashioned way: with local newspapers and the Little Nickel. I eventually found a Rat Terrier breeder in the Pacific Northwest and reached out to other people who shared their lives with the breed. Those conversations helped me learn more about Rat Terriers and began my connection with these lively, devoted dogs.
  • What makes your program special?

I prioritize health and temperament when planning pairings and consider each puppy’s potential and the needs of their future family. My dogs have gone on to become wonderful family companions, therapy dogs, health-alert dogs, and competition champions and grand champions. I also consider the goals of families seeking a dog for therapy work, agility, performance events, or conformation showing. I want every family to find the right fit for their home and lifestyle. I take time to learn about each family’s hopes and needs so I can help them choose a puppy who will suit their home. I’m also happy to stay in touch after puppies go home and answer questions as they grow. I’m proud to share my life with this lively, loyal breed and to help each puppy begin a happy life with its new family.

Excellent level

Susan Turner reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Rat Terriers.

  • Hip Dysplasia

Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.

  • Cardiac Evaluation (registered with OFA)

Heart testing reduces the chance of passing down congenital heart disease, which can cause a range of symptoms ranging from trouble exercising to heart failure.

  • Patellar Luxation

Knee testing reduces the chance of passing down Patellar Luxation, which results in the kneecap becoming displaced or dislocated and can cause mild to severe joint pain.

  • Legg-Calve-Perthes (OFA)

A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.

  • Primary Lens Luxation (PLL)

Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
