Rocky and Shadow Bean's litter

This litter is officially one week old today 💛 They are currently in the neonatal stage, where their primary focus is on sleep, warmth, and steady growth. At this age, we monitor each puppy closely to ensure consistent weight gain and proper nursing. While this stage may look quiet, it’s an important foundation for healthy development. Over the next couple of weeks, they’ll begin to open their eyes and gradually become more aware of their surroundings. We take this time to maintain a clean, calm environment and provide early, gentle handling to support future temperament. If you’re planning ahead for a future puppy, we’re always happy to answer questions and help determine the best fit for your home and lifestyle.

Following up on Ginger’s visit yesterday, her radiographs have been completed and everything is progressing well as we head into the final days of her pregnancy. We are expecting her litter around April 22nd. Radiographs at this stage help us prepare for a safe and supported whelping process and make sure we’re ready for both mom and puppies. Everything is looking good so far, and we’ll continue to share updates as we get closer to her due date.

These boys have been raised in a home environment with consistent handling, socialization, and exposure to everyday household activity. We’re seeing affectionate, social temperaments and the ability to settle and relax, important traits for long-term success in a companion home. We prioritize thoughtful placement based on temperament and lifestyle compatibility. If you’re interested in learning more about one of these boys, feel free to reach out here on GoodDog.

It’s always the same; each puppy feels like “the one.” As they grow, their individual personalities really start to stand out. Some are more confident and outgoing, while others are more thoughtful or easygoing. We spend a lot of time observing temperament so we can help match each puppy with the right home and lifestyle. If you were choosing based on personality, which one would stand out to you?

One of the most common misconceptions across dog breeds is that female puppies are easier or better companions. While preferences are completely understandable, what we consistently see is this: temperament, socialization, and individual personality matter far more than gender alone. Male Rat Terriers are often very people-oriented, affectionate, and eager to bond closely with their families. They tend to seek out connection and enjoy being part of everyday life. We focus on temperament-based placement to ensure each puppy is matched with the right home. We’ll be sharing more this week about what to consider when choosing a puppy beyond gender alone. We are currently focusing on placing a few of our boys in the right homes and are happy to talk through personality, lifestyle, and fit.

We have had a wonderful experience with Jaden and Puppy Patch Rat Terriers. We first saw a picture of Obi on the first day of Spring and decided to apply to adopt him as a the youngest member of our family. Already having a Rat Terrier, that we rescued, we knew what we were going to be getting ourselves into, but we also knew what we were looking for. Jayden was more than willing to answer questions and was very responsive. We brought Obi home a week ago, and from his first night with us, he has fit right in with his older siblings, and our entire family. He is finding his own way, but willing to follow the other dogs and wants to learn. In his first week he’s had to ride in a car for over 9 hours (because of a vehicle break down and with lots of potty breaks!), got to stay in a motel, went to the vet, learned how to navigate stairs, two different pet doors, met The Cat, walked on a leash, but also followed his siblings off leash and stayed with his “pack”, working on “come”, “sit”, and “no bite”. He even put one tiny paw in the Columbia River and immediately decided that was a mistake. Lots of naps, and lost of playing. We’ve been enjoying him and know he was the right decision.
