I'm James & Heather D., the breeder behind Thunder Mountain Gun Dogs located in Hot Springs, VA. Our dogs are bred for their temperament, natural hunting ability, health, and athleticism. They are versatile, well-rounded pointers who work hard in the field, play hard at home, and snuggle even harder. Our dogs are members of the family who live in our home and even accompany us to work.

Why did you start breeding?
We genuinely love our dogs and enjoy every aspect of life with them, from the puppy stage to the seasoned hunter. We hope to share this same enjoyment with other families.What makes your program special?
Because we operate a small breeding program, we are more readily available to our new puppy families. James is available beyond adoption and throughout your training process. He can offer advice with both obedience and bird training.What are the different breed coat colors in your program?
Our puppies include liver roan, liver and white, black roan, and black and white. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home and a kennel on my property.

Price
"This price includes initial vet check-ups, vaccinations, and deworming, puppy food starter pack, a toy with mom & littermates' scent, initial potty training, and the $300 deposit. The deposit does apply toward the full price of your puppy. The deposit is non-refundable with only one exception. If a health issue arises with your chosen puppy, your deposit will be refunded."

This helps protect both you and your breeder, ensuring that you both have a clear understanding of the terms of your puppy purchase. Litter update on 20 Mar •…And I wonder why I can’t get any work done for eight weeks. These little faces are just too sweet, each waiting for their turn to be held. So thankful that the warmer weather returned yesterday because they don’t love being stuck inside all day. And you can only imagine the chaos that ensues when we let them run around the house…. The chaos and snuggles that are soon to be yours as pick up begins next week!

Litter update on 12 Mar •…We were blessed with beautiful weather for a few days, and the pups have loved being outside! Another good vet checkup this week. Made the switch to dry food. They are growing, running, and romping! As you can see, they want to be as close to you as possible. So get ready for your snuggly velcro baby, because that doesn’t go away no matter how big they get! 🐾 Pics & videos here, plus more in their individual listings.

Litter update on 02 Mar •…We finally had a day warm enough to take the puppies outside! ☀️ But the snow has returned today. It was fun while it lasted. They ran, romped, and met the rest of the gang, but it wasn’t long before they were piling up on my lap for a nap in the sunshine. Sorry for the shaky videos. It’s difficult to get good shots when there are always little ones under my feet or on my lap. Don’t forget to check their listings because we try to add new photos each week. If you scroll through them you should see some that we’ve added recently. They are growing so fast! 🐾

Litter update on 19 Feb •…The puppies are growing and changing so fast! They are all walking well, and they can see and hear now. They had a great vet check up yesterday! And, as you can see, the receptionist was in love. 🐾

Litter update on 14 Aug 2025 •…The babies are seven weeks old today! Time has flown by and they’re almost ready to go home! If you haven’t already, be sure to get in touch regarding pick up. We sent out messages with dates/times along with the contracts to be signed. Looking forward to seeing everyone next week. While we hate to see them go, we know you’re excited and will love them as much as we do!

Litter update on 28 July 2025 •…It was a big week for the babies from week three to four! A great vet visit and everyone was on their best behavior. Introduction to grass, and you can tell by the howl that not everyone was a fan. Especially since it was wet. But they are right at home in it now and enjoying their outdoor play time! Potty training began and it is coming along nicely. They’ve grown big enough to escape the whelping box, so the final panel went up. Another week and they’ll be over that too! They’ve discovered the crate and voluntarily put themselves there. And their favorite big change…. puppy mush. It’s safe to say that they love it!

About RJ
RJ is such a lovable, calm boy in the house and a beast in the field. He is both the perfect hunting companion and sweet family dog. RJ came to us from FIT Point Bird Dogs and was expertly trained with them as well. He arrived ready to hunt and loves every minute of it! He is incredibly versatile, athletic, and obedient. There aren't competitive field trials in our neck of the woods, but we have no doubt that he would excel because his performance in the field is second to none. He is also absolutely gorgeous and most recently did photo shoots with The Frye Boot Company. This amazing boy has it all and we look forward to watching his puppies grow to follow in his footsteps!

About Hazel
Hazel is a sweet, gentle girl. She loves her family and wants to be everywhere we are. She has incredible stamina and sticks with us for miles through the woods and fields, fearlessly running up and down every cliff in sight just for fun. But she is also completely content to lay around and snuggle all day. She is a beautiful liver and white with ticking. She is extremely athletic with a lean, muscular build. She loves the water, going on full speed runs through the mountains, and chasing birds.

About Murphy
Murphy is such an affectionate girl. She loves to snuggle, go for full speed runs through the mountains, and bird hunt. She does an excellent job pointing the way. She is extremely athletic and versatile in the field, while being calm and obedient in the house. She is such a sweet girl who loves her family and has proven to be a good mama as well. He puppies are precious!

+8It’s been a true pleasure dealing with James and Heather this whole time! We were looking for a family / hunting dog and it’s exactly what we found when we got Mack. His names Creed now though. Choosing our perfect fit was extremely easy and James and Heather were very patient. It’s evident they care deeply about there puppies. We were informed and updated along the way constantly. After Creed made it home, the initial training our puppy received was apparent cause after two weeks he’s still hasn’t had any accidents In the house and listens very well for a puppy. He is in love with our grandkids and very playful! Picking up where they began training seems to be an easy transition and he’s listening very well for only 10 weeks old! I would highly recommend James and Heather when looking for your next best family friend!
