I'm Karina R., the breeder behind Tornjak Kennel "Od Dinare" located in Raleigh, NC. Tornjaks are very special dogs with a rich history. In order to preserve this noble breed, we focus on breeding fully health-tested dogs with passing scores, correct structure and balanced temperaments. Our goal is to uphold the breed’s integrity, function, and historical purpose.
Q. & A. with Karina
Why did you start breeding?
After importing our dogs, performing health tests and helping found the TCNA breed club, I was heartbroken to see the poor state of Tornjak health in N America, especially regarding orthopedic scores. With my veterinary background and the support of long-time breeders in the countries of origin, I felt a strong responsibility to support to the breed’s N America future through ethical breeding.
What makes your program special?
We are not a high volume breeder. All of our Tornjaks are family members above all else. They go on trips with us and sleep in our bed. The heart of our program is healthy, happy Tornjaks breed with intention and care.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.

About Scylla
Scylla is a companion dog and lives in our home with us. Her interests and hobbies include protecting her bird feeder from hawks and squirrels, drinking out of the bathtub faucet, asking if it's dinner time yet, swimming and telling her younger brother to stop running in the house.
In true Tornjak style, she's a fierce guardian of her home and family. As a dominant female Tornjak, Scylla takes her guarding role very seriously. She is quick to tell us when something is out of place. While Scylla is naturally cautious of unfamiliar people, she is incredibly affectionate with her family and those she's deemed 'acceptable'. It's this combination of strength and sweetness that makes us adore her.
Tornjak Kennel "Od Dinare" reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Tornjaks.
Hip Dysplasia

Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.
Eye Certification (CAER, registered with OFA)
Eye testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide range of hereditary eye illnesses including retinal dysplasia, lens luxation, and glaucoma, which can cause impared vision or blindness.
Cardiac Evaluation (registered with OFA)
Heart testing reduces the chance of passing down congenital heart disease, which can cause a range of symptoms ranging from trouble exercising to heart failure.
Vet Wellness Exam
A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.
DNA Disease Panel
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
