Meet the breeder

I'm Tana W., the breeder behind W5 Pointers located in Osakis, MN. Our deep love for this breed drives everything we do. Holding ourselves to high ethical standards, we are intentional, low-volume breeder, only producing a litter once every year or two. Our focus is entirely on health, trainability, and hunting capability. All of our dogs are AKC registered with 4-generation pedigrees, OFA certified (hips/elbows), and DNA clear. We skip the showmanship ring to focus on what matters most to a true outdoorsmen: a dog with powerful hunting instincts, incredible stamina, and an easygoing temperament. Our dogs are beloved family members first and dedicated hunting partners second, they are well-rounded family companions who can flip a switch and settle right down at the end of the day.

Q. & A. with Tana

  • Why did you start breeding?

After years of having only male pointers, when we brought home our first female GSP, Tikka, we quickly realized she was something special. She possessed the sharp nose of an incredible hunter paired with an incredible family temperament: gentle, calm, quiet, and a total magnet for children. In a breed that can often be high-strung, her calm disposition stood out. We knew right away that these were traits that needed to be preserve and pass on to the next generation. Her very first litter did just that, proving she produces the perfect balance of drive, train-ability, and temperament in her puppies.
  • What makes your program special?

We treat our dogs like family, and that means doing things right. Our female, Tikka, and the studs we use are AKC registered, OFA health-tested for hips and elbows, and completely DNA clear. Our main goal is simply to breed the kind of dog we love: a perfect companion for the dedicated outdoorsman. Our pups get the best start possible. Before going to their new homes, they are vet-checked, dewormed, vaccinated, and have their tails docked and dewclaws removed. They are AKC registerable and, most importantly, incredibly well-socialized. Between our other farm animals and our kids giving them daily love, these puppies are handled from day one to ensure they have early manners, easygoing temperaments, and a love for children and other animals.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies include black roan and liver roan. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

Where do I even begin! Tana at W5 Pointers was a dream to have during this process. Tana was extremely responsive, answered any and all questions that I had and even asked me questions about our life to make sure our boy was going to a perfect home. While we were waiting to bring our Houser home, Tana sent us video's and pictures of him while also giving us updates on how he was doing which was extremely reassuring to us. When we picked Houser up they were extremely welcoming allowed us to see Houser and his mom (Tikka) playing together and let us get to know Tikka. Tana made sure that we had all the information that we needed and that we were fully prepared to bring our boy home! She let us ask as many questions as we wanted which I had plenty of! It was extremely comforting to see Tikka's calm and nurturing demeanor she was such a sweetheart. Houser clearly got her calmness and sweet demeanor. Houser is almost 16 weeks now and he is the sweetest, calmest, gentle, silly boy! He is the biggest snuggle bug! He has been fully potty trained of a few weeks now, leach and crate trained, and even loves to show you that he can shake! He loves pheasant feathers and is showing such an interest in hunting and is pointing like crazy. We get compliments everywhere we go about how sweet and calm he is for him being a GSP puppy. He is the talk and main focus anywhere we bring him! He loves other dogs and play's so nice and gentle with every person, kiddo, or other dog he comes in contact with! Houser is by far the best boy we could have ever have asked for and so much more! We are so thankful for Tana and for her helping us get our Houser!

Tara at W5 Pointers made my process getting our puppy, Rya absolutely flawless. She sent constant update photos, videos, and stories, answered every question I had (even the ones I didn’t know to ask), and made it incredibly clear how much her family loves and cares for their dogs and the homes they go to. Picking Rya up was such a great experience, and meeting her mom Tikka made everything make sense immediately. Tikka is still one of the calmest, sweetest, and most well-behaved GSPs I’ve ever met, and Rya absolutely inherited those traits. Even as a tiny puppy, Rya was incredibly smart and eager to learn. She picked up potty training, crate training, leash manners, and basic commands almost immediately. Now that she’s older, she continues to amaze us every day with how emotionally intelligent, calm, and well-mannered she is for such a high-energy breed. Everywhere we go people comment on how sweet, gentle, and composed she is — from strangers familiar with the breed to our vet, coworkers, friends, and family. She truly is loved everywhere she goes. She absolutely adores people, especially kids, and has always been so patient and gentle with them. She also grew up around our cats and has been incredibly respectful and calm with them from day one. It’s obvious the puppies were raised with a strong foundation and proper socialization because she transitioned into our home so naturally. She’s also been amazing help at my job as a dog trainer with shy or nervous dogs, always approaching them calmly and respectfully and adjusting her energy to make them feel comfortable which leads to them becoming more confident in themselves. Watching her patiently encourage more timid dogs to come out of their shell has been so special and really speaks to her temperament. One of my favorite things about Rya is how versatile she is. She can spend the day running, swimming, hiking, wrestling with her sister Scout, or coming to work with me and socializing beautifully with other dogs — then come home and completely settle down beside us like she’s been doing it her whole life. She has the perfect off-switch that everyone hopes for in a working breed dog. She’s also doing incredibly well in hunting training and has shown such natural instinct, focus, and drive in the field while still remaining eager to please and easy to work with. She’s goofy, athletic, affectionate, unbelievably smart, and honestly the best companion I could’ve ever asked for. Raising her has been one of the most rewarding experiences, and I’m so thankful to Tara and W5 for helping us find such an incredible dog.
