Partnering with pet insurance to continue the work of responsible breeders

Why we’re working with Figo to offer a lifetime discount on pet insurance to your Good Dog owners.

Good Dog is on a mission to educate the public, support dog breeders, and promote canine health so we can give our dogs the world they deserve.

Good Dog is on a mission to educate the public, support dog breeders, and promote canine health so we can give our dogs the world they deserve.

In alignment with our mission to ensure a future filled with healthy dogs and promote responsible dog ownership, we've been working steadily behind the scenes to find an insurance partner the Good Dog community could stick with in the long run. We set out to find a partner that was affordable, customizable, and prioritized puppy health. Knowing breeders have been struggling to find a provider accessible enough to keep their buyers past the 30 day free trial mark — we embarked on a journey to find an offer our breeders could exclusively bring to their buyers.

Why we chose Figo for the Good Dog community

We spoke to over 20 insurance experts and ten different insurance providers as we set out to find the best offer you could bring to your buyers.

  • Flexible: It was important to us that Good Dog owners would be able to see any vet, anywhere, without worrying about whether or not their insurance would be accepted. They can also cancel their plan at any time with no fee.
  • Efficient: Most online claims are processed in at least three days time, so Good Dog owners will never have long waiting periods to get reimbursed for their dog’s treatment.
  • Good value: Pet insurance should be accessible to everyone, and Figo offers affordable plans for coverage on care a pet could actually need instead of lumping in excessive frills.
  • Completely customizable: Owners can opt into a basic plan or choose to get more coverage. They can also customize their annual coverage amount, deductible, and reimbursement package to suit their needs. Figo is one of the only providers to offer packages with unlimited payouts, no upper age limits, 24/7 access to a live televet professional, and customizable wellness care.
  • Ideal for puppies: Figo’s policies offer good coverage for common puppy health issues, like accidents, emergencies, and dental injury. And you can see any vet, anywhere, so finding an in-network vet isn’t another thing you need to add to your growing puppy to-do list. Unlike some other options, Figo’s plans are priced based on your dog’s age, meaning you pay less for a puppy than you would for an older dog. Figo also offers the option for wellness coverage to support first year expenses like vet visits, vaccines, and spay/neuter.
  • Multi-pet discount: Good Dog owners get all their pets covered at an additional 5% discount. In addition to getting 10% off for life* as a Good Dog owner, anyone who has multiple pets in their home is eligible for an additional 5% off the other pets in their home, making the discount for a multi-pet household 15%.

The screening process

Our mission at Good Dog has always been promoting responsible dog ownership, educating the public, and supporting responsible breeders to ensure a future filled with healthy dogs. We know breeders work tirelessly, night and day, to provide their puppies with beginnings that result in long, happy lives. In alignment with that mission and to help support your puppies long after pick-up day, we’ve been steadily working away at finding an insurance partner that fits the Good Dog community.

As we moved through this screening process, we met with every major insurance provider, keeping in mind the concerns of our breeder community and the struggles you’ve faced with helping buyers find an insurance plan they can stick with. Although some providers offer a free month, it was evident that a staggering number of owners opt out of coverage after their trial is up because they can't afford to pay the high premiums, leaving the puppy you both love unprotected. We also spoke to dozens of Good Dog buyers to get their perspectives on insurance, their concerns, and what was important to them. Across the board, it was clear that flexibility and freedom were essentials, as well as prioritizing puppy health. Ultimately, after a long process, we’re excited to announce that we decided Figo was the best option for Good Dog owners because it’s accessible, affordable, and completely customizable.

Finding the best solution for you

We know you think of your puppies – and their owners – as extended family. And in turn, your owners think of their dogs as family members, too, meaning they would do anything to provide them the best care possible.

Even the most responsible, careful dog owners can find themselves in the waiting room of the emergency vet. Our hope is that our offer provides peace of mind that your puppies will always get top notch care, regardless of cost, from pick-up day well into their twilight years.

Competitors in the insurance space might provide other benefits, but many providers, even those who offer months free at the start of a puppy’s life, see problems with retaining owners past that particular trial period. Only 3% of owners opt into a long term insurance plan after a trial period – this is mostly due to the fact that insurance is a lifetime investment that only demonstrates its value over time. The low retention rate could also be attributed to the fact that owners realize they can’t afford premiums once their trial period wraps up. Figo’s flexibility and accessibility makes it easy for any kind of owner to build a plan they can stick with for the life of their dog.
