Choosing a breeder

Once you know which dog breed is right for you, it’s time to find a breeder to work with.

Visit a breeder’s profile to explore photos, review policies, ask about the health testing they perform and their vet and vaccination protocols, and learn about their program and how they care for their dogs to decide if they seem like a good fit for you — after all, you’ll be working closely with each other, so it’s important you can build a good relationship.

We recommend you expand your breeder search to include breeders outside your immediate region. This will help you find the best breeder — and pup — for you. Many breeders are open to working with potential puppy buyers from across the country. Plus, there are many transportation options to bring your pup home, no matter the distance.

Request info from a breeder to learn more about their policies and contracts, matching process, and transportation options.
