Q: I use washable hospital pads to line my whelping box and the floor of my playpen when puppies are older. I know that puppies can easily absorb cleaning products through their skin which can be detrimental. I am very careful to only use chlorhexidine when cleaning the whelping area and not other cleaners but that got me wondering about my laundry detergent. My question is what is a safe laundry detergent to launder these reusable pads and toys with. I am currently using Tide pods with an extra rinse cycle but I am not sure if a residue still remains or not. Thank you for your help and I look forward to hearing your response.

A: I am old enough to have used cloth diapers with my children, many, many years ago! So, I treat the washable hospital pads just like I did the diapers. I use a hot water wash with Dreft and a half cup of bleach in a large load, with an extra hot rinse cycle, and then I dry them in the dryer. This has worked for me with my dogs, and other than a bit of fading, I have not had any issues using this protocol with pads or toys.
