Q: I am in a bit of a conundrum with your protocol for deworming our pregnant bitches with Pyrantel Pamoate. I use this as my “go-to” dewormer. But the dosage I’ve always followed, as recommended by fellow breeders, veterinarians and internet research is nearly 1/2 the amount you recommend in your pregnancy protocol at once per month not daily for 25+ days. I raise Great Pyrenees and my current pregnant mama’s weight at the time of ultrasound (day #35) is 120 lbs. According to your formula, that would be roughly 14 cc/ml every day from day 40 through 2-5 days post-whelp. My confusion is: according to my regular protocol, at that weight, dosage would be roughly 5.4 ml/cc monthly. Additionally, you mentioned your protocol being a low dosage, spread over 25+ days. This makes me think my math is way off or I’ve got something or other terribly confused. Please, would you be so kind as to clarify? I’m intrigued by the consecutive dosing over a period of time for the reasons given, but mainly the dosage amount?
A: The Pregnancy Worming Protocol is with Fenbenzadole, NOT with Pyrantal Pamoate. That could be part of the problem? The Fenbenzadole is the 10% SafeGuard Goat Wormer liquid that you can purchase at Revival or a feed store that may be local to you. The worming protocol that I talked about the other week for pregnant girls is the low dose of 1cc per 8.8lbs of weight, using liquid SafeGuard 10% Fenbenzadole, for approx. 25 days starting at day 40 of pregnancy. Then, the follow-up for post whelping worming is the regular dose of liquid SafeGuard 10% Fenbenzadole, for 3 days, using a dose of 1cc per 2.2lbs which translates into 0.23cc per pound of body weight for both puppies and Mom. Post-whelping, I worm both puppies and Mom at the same time so that there is no re-infection of the parasites.
So, that means that your math is correct! Using the method above and dividing 120 by 8.8 you get 14.2, so that means your girl would get 14.2cc daily of Safeguard 10% starting at day 40, for the next 25 days.
Don’t worry about being confused, we can be overwhelmed with information and I would rather someone ask twice then make a mistake!
