Q: Do you do a clean out shot of Oxy after the last pup is born? What are the benefits and risks?
A: My veterinarian has trusted me to have oxytocin to use after whelping or have a large litter as a clean-out shot. However, I have found that I seldom use it, and instead, I have been using 1tsp-1TBSP of Organic Red Raspberry Leaves that I get from Amazon (organic, cut and sifted) mixed into each meal for 7-14days. The use of the red raspberry also has a side benefit of helping increase milk production as well. Most placentas will be expelled easily with the use of the red raspberry within the first few days after birth.
Oxytocin is a drug that causes fairly strong involuntary uterine contractions. It is also used as an intra-nasal to assist with mothering. Additionally, your vet may recommend that it be used with larger litters to help with possible SIPS (subinvolution of placental sites) which causes extra heavy discharge for an extended length of time. Below are two interesting webpages addressing this issue that you might enjoy looking at.
