Most puppies are highly distractible so even when they need to urinate or defecate, they get distracted by a noise or a leaf or a squirrel and forget what they are doing. Pups are also playful so when they are loose in the yard, they’d rather play than get down to business. So, how do we keep them focused on their job, pottying, rather than flitting off to do something else? Well, it’s simple–the leash. The leash will make your house training go so much more quickly, that you’ll be amazed.

The Leash

We hope everything has been going well with your potty training efforts! By now your puppy should begin to understand that potty training is not only about doing its business outdoors but also understanding that doing so brings lots of treats!

This Week's Goal Is:

  • Keep your puppy on leash for every potty trip this week.

How to Meet That Goal

1. Before getting your puppy out of the crate or ex-pen:

  • Grab its leash.
  • Grab some treats.

2. Every time you take your pup out of the crate or pen put hi/her leash on immediately.

3. Ask your pup whatever your phrase is for "Do you want to go outside?"

  • Remember to take it out the same door each time.

4. Walk your puppy directly to its potty area remembering:

  • Say only its potty command "Hurry up" "Get Busy," "Go Pee," "Do Business," etc.
  • b. Refrain from any play or chatter until it has peed and/or pooped. Your puppy has a very important job to do so don’t distract it.

5. Stay in the potty area moving slowly around so your pup can sniff and find the right place.

6. Repeat its potty command both when it gets distracted and just as you think it is about to go. If your puppy is successful: Reward your puppy with a treat and genuine praise
