Good Dog’s journey to partnering with Figo

We spoke to over 20 insurance experts and 10 different insurance providers as we set out to find the best option for our owners.

The mission

As our community of owners continues to grow here at Good Dog, we found it important to provide support beyond finding your new puppy. Go-home day is just the beginning of the journey – and we know part of navigating puppyhood means preparing for both the expected and unexpected.

Insurance is an integral part of that preparation, and provides peace of mind that your puppy will always get the care they need. Whether it’s eating a grape, getting an ear infection, or chipping a tooth – insurance can be a safety net to help offset the cost of unexpected vet bills. We know there’s a lot to consider when you’re trying to find an insurance plan, so we set out to find the provider that would suit the unique needs of Good Dog members.

Our owners

Most of our owners think of their dogs as family. They’ll likely do anything they can to take care of them, even if it means taking on an unexpected vet bill that may cost thousands. You can’t predict accidents or emergency vet visits because your puppy decided to snack on a sock or picked up a virus at the dog park. We wanted to find an insurance partner that was ideal for puppy owners, and a provider you could see yourself sticking with for life.

And while our breeders do their best to ensure their puppies have long, healthy lives, there are some situations you just can’t prepare for, no matter how intentional you are. Chronic conditions like allergies and epilepsy can develop early in young puppies, and illnesses like kennel cough can pop up during the sensitive window where puppies still haven’t completed all their vaccinations.

The process

We kicked off our two-year search by interviewing over 20 pet insurance experts, ranging from executives at pet insurance companies to attorneys who worked extensively with the pet insurance product. From there, we worked with a founding member of the North American Pet Health Insurance Association, a trade association for the pet insurance industry, to build a list of potential insurance partners. After reviewing partner offerings, we selected ten pet insurance companies to speak to. In the process of looking for the best option for our owners, we focused on what would be best for the puppies finding forever homes through Good Dog and the people who love them so much.

We adapted our system for screening dog breeders and followed a similar process for screening insurance providers. After consulting with industry experts and learning about the needs of our breeder and owner communities, we landed on Figo as the best option.

Talking with Figo, we learned that we both had a shared mission of ensuring owners can always afford care, and we were able to bring Good Dog owners 10% off premiums for life.*

What Figo offers that other providers don’t

Flexibility - it was important to us that our owners would be able to see any vet, anywhere, without worrying about whether or not their insurance would be accepted. You can also cancel your plan at any time with no fee.

Speed - most online claims are processed in at least three days time, so you’ll never have long waiting periods to get reimbursed for your dog’s treatment.

Good value - pet insurance should be accessible to everyone, and Figo offers affordable plans for coverage on care your pet could actually need instead of lumping in excessive frills.

Complete customization - owners can opt into a basic plan or choose to get more coverage. You can also customize your annual coverage amount, deductible, and reimbursement package to suit your needs. Figo is one of the only providers to offer packages with 100% reimbursement, no upper age limits, 24/7 access to a live televet, and customizable wellness care.

Ideal for puppies - Figo’s policies offer good coverage for common puppy health issues, like accidents, emergencies, and dental injury. And you can see any vet, anywhere, so finding an in-network vet isn’t another thing you need to add to your growing puppy to-do list. Unlike some other options, Figo’s plans are priced based on your dog’s age, meaning you pay less for a puppy than you would for an older dog. Figo also offers the option for wellness coverage to support first year expenses like vet visits, vaccines, and spay/neuter.

Multi-pet discount - in addition to getting 10% off for life as a Good Dog owner, anyone who has multiple pets in their home is eligible for an additional 5% off the other pets in their home.

We couldn't be more excited to continue to bring our mission to life with this new partnership and support our owners in protecting their puppies from day one.
