Q. & A. with Tami & Gail
Why did you start breeding?
Gail and John began with their first companion and obedience dogs in 1968, and began showings dogs in the 1980s. In 1998, a breeder entrusted us with a quality bitch worthy of breeding; she became our foundation. We consider structure, temperament, health clearances, breed type, and pedigree and strive to produce excellent individuals and consistent litters with quality in every puppy.
What makes your program special?
Today’s Anamacara dogs represent our vision of the breed standard, correctly structured, powerful moving dogs that could work efficiently in the field all day and then come in to be wonderful house dogs and family pets. We have a clear vision of what makes the ideal Irish Setter and what we want to achieve with each breeding. We are the extensive health history and consistency of our litters.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.

Breeder-Reported Testing
Excellent level
Anamacara Irish Setters reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Irish Setters.
Hip Dysplasia
Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.
Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)
Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.
Eye Certification (CAER, registered with OFA)
Eye testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide range of hereditary eye illnesses including retinal dysplasia, lens luxation, and glaucoma, which can cause impared vision or blindness.
Thyroid (Autoimmune Thyroiditis, registered with OFA)
A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.
PRA, Irish Setter Type
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
