Meet the breeder

I'm Charity A., the breeder behind Basket Hound Bassets located in Big Rapids, MI. We are pet owners first and foremost. All of our puppies are raised as members of our family until they’re ready to join yours. Each of our dogs has brought so much happiness to us throughout their lives. We want to do our part to produce wonderful, healthy dogs that can bring other people joy as well, and we strive to provide each of our puppies with loving homes where they can live happy lives.

Q. & A. with Charity

  • Why did you start breeding?

Three years ago I bought my first basset hound, Sam, and I was hooked! He is sweet and friendly (also mouthy! haha) not to mention seeing something about 4 times as long as it is tall getting the zoomies is a sight to chase away all the blues. A year later I got Piper and discovered a whole other possibility for their personality, she is cuddly and even friendlier than Sam (which I hadn't thought possible). I just love them and want to share that with the world.
  • What makes your program special?

We provide not only a quality dog but also a quality experience. Each new pet parent that chooses a puppy from us will get a personalized basket full of the essentials you will need when you take your puppy home for the first time. In addition to that a portion of the proceeds is donated to a local animal shelter for each pup.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies include black and white and brown black and white. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

Getting a puppy from Charity

Charity has been certified by Good Dog’s screening team for responsible and trusted breeding practices. When you’re ready, reach out to ask about the puppies or anything else on your mind. You’ll get to know each other through messaging, phone, or video and pay securely, all on Good Dog.

After buyers complete the application and screening process, Charity partners with them to find the best puppy match.

“My matching process is built on a foundation of rigorous screening and developmental observation to ensure every puppy is placed in the right environment. Applicants must provide two personal references and a vet reference for approval. While I allow families to indicate a preference for a specific puppy based on sex and markings early on to begin the bonding process, final placement is not confirmed until the 5 to 6-week mark. This waiting period is critical because a puppy’s true personality and temperament do not manifest until that time; I utilize those weeks to evaluate each pup’s drive and energy levels against your specific lifestyle to guarantee a successful, long-term match.”

Price

Puppy prices include a $500 non-refundable deposit and between $900 - $2,500 final payment, before taxes & fees.
Pay over time with Klarna.

“The price includes the first round of vaccinations, de-worming and goodie basket. This particular litter of puppies are of AKC champion bloodline. We will take deposits after the puppies are 3 weeks old. Deposit amount is 30% of total puppy price.”

Contract & health guarantee

Charity may provide a written contract or health guarantee when you purchase a puppy. This helps protect both you and your breeder, ensuring that you both have a clear understanding of the terms of your puppy purchase. If Charity offers a contract or guarantee, the details will be personalized by them. If you have any questions or want to know more, don't hesitate to reach out to Charity directly.

Charity was great to work with! Samual (now Donut) is an amazing puppy who is so sweet and training is going very well. Charity takes great pride in her work, and rightfully so. She is very knowledgeable about the breed and gives excellent pointers that makes training easier. I highly recommend.

Working with charity was pure joy! Not only was she extremely knowledgeable and caring you can that she loves the breed and her puppies show it. She was patient with my questions since it's been many years since I had a puppy. But what I really appreciated was her compassion. I had lost Alea my 12 and half year old basset just before Christmas. When I spoke to Charity that very first time I knew I would be gettingg my puppy from her, even though it was close to a 300 mile trip one way. It was worth every mile.

We couldn’t be more thrilled with our experience with Basket Hound Bassets. Charity is the real deal and treats her dogs with such love and care. Our dog Ralph is happy, healthy, and has adjusted well to his new environment. This is in no small part to all of the hard work Charity does to expose her puppies early on to various noises, sensations, etc. Thank you Charity for trusting us to give Ralph a great life. We will treat him with all the love and care he received in his first 8 weeks.

Our puppy is perfect. He adjusted so well to our home and we credit that to Charity and BHB. They provide you with everything you need for a safe trip home (a basket full of toys, a blanket, treats, wipes, poop bags, etc). We won’t get a pup from any other breeder!
