Meet the breeder

I'm Christine R., the breeder behind Black Beard Black Russian Terriers located in Winchester, CA. We are experienced breeders who take our role seriously. Our dogs are outstanding Black Russian Terriers. We take pride in their accomplishments in the ring and their amazing temperaments and abilities at home. We produce wonderful puppies that thrive in their new families.

Q. & A. with Christine

  • Why did you start breeding?

The year 2022 marked 37 years that my husband and I have bred AKC registered dogs, beginning with herding breeds (German Shepherds and Australian Shepherds) before moving into the Working Group in the late 1990s. The Black Russian Terrier joined our family about 15 years ago when we imported a puppy from Chigasovo kennels in Russia.
  • What makes your program special?

Education and knowledge are tools that I value highly. The pursuit of higher education, even in dog breeding and showing, is a labor of love. Stewart and I have successfully bred from AKC’s Herding, Toy, Sport, and Working Groups. We are AKC Breeders of Merit for Black Russian Terriers, with 100% of our puppies AKC registered. We have produced numerous Champions, Grand Champions, Obedience and Rally titled dogs, therapy dogs, and International Champions. With each litter, I learn more about the breed by studying structure, temperament, coat type, and other characteristics. One of the most exciting areas of study is canine genetics. Science has opened up numerous opportunities to study how genetics affects population diversity, disease, recessive and dominant conditions, coat color, and other phenotypical traits. Using diversity studies, genetic coefficients of inbreeding, pedigree analysis, veterinary science, theriogenology, and guidance from mentors, I believe that our breeding program is poised to improve genetic diversity, working ability, physical characteristics, and genotype while preserving the breed through selective and purposeful breeding. We have successfully produced 5 frozen semen breedings. Some of our frozen semen litters were sired by dogs long deceased, resulting in several large litters, including one litter of 11 puppies. Every litter is carefully raised in an environment that will stimulate mental and physical health while providing an opportunity to thrive and build confidence. Each puppy is evaluated for type, structure, and temperament. We are grateful to breeders who had the forethought to preserve their stud dogs through frozen semen banking.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies are black. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

They live in my home and guardian homes.
