About Ruger
Ruger embodies everything I have ever wanted in dog; as such, she is the foundation of my breeding program. The German Shepherd Dog was created to be an all around utility dog, and Ruger's versatility makes her just that. She has medium energy and a perfect off-switch, content to relax at home or be on the move all day. Stable and confident, she is the best sidekick to run errands with. Incredibly intelligent and biddable with tons of food and toy drive, she is a joy to train through both free shaping and luring. She is aloof with strangers but will accept affection if asked, neutral to zoo and farm animals, and appropriately dominant with other dogs (sets firm boundaries without being unfair and tolerates new boarding and daycare dogs coming into our home). She has natural herding instincts in the living fence style, immediately took to keeping my chickens out of the road. She loves to use her nose and displays fantastic hunt drive. In bite work, she shows slightly more defense than prey drive and would absolutely react accordingly in a real life protection scenario. She can take a lot of pressure and has great possession. In coursing ability tests and Barn Hunt, she exhibits very high prey drive.

Breeder-Reported Testing
Excellent level
Blumenhaus German Shepherd Dogs reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for German Shepherds.
Hip Dysplasia
Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.
Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)
Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.
Temperament Test, Spine (OFA, FCI), Vet Wellness Exam
A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.
DNA Disease Panel, Degenerative Myelopathy (DM; SOD1A)
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
