I'm Holly Y., the breeder behind Cedarwood K9's & Kats located in Lincoln University, PA. Cedarwood is celebrating our 20th year in 2023, breeding quality registered German Shepherd dogs from west German working lines.
All of my dogs are part of our family. I test for genetic defects in the breed and test for sound temperaments.
Q. & A. with Holly
Why did you start breeding?
I had purchased a German Shepherd from a local breeder a few years before I began and didn't get him neutered, I always had in the back of my mind to breed him. She helped me by giving me my first female and that was it. I loved the experience, loved raising the puppies, learning about breeding, bloodlines, health, and mostly meeting and bringing such joy to the humans who bought the puppies!
What makes your program special?
I breed based on temperament more than anything. It is very important not to send home a puppy to a family if the dog will grow up to be too much to handle. When choosing my breeders, I make sure that they are of sound mind, to begin with. Over the past 20 years, I have seen some potential breeding stock that was not suitable, so those dogs had to move on to another job.
What are the different breed coat types in your program?
Our puppies have stock coats. Coat types may vary depending on the parent dogs.
What are the different breed coat colors in your program?
Our puppies are black and tan. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home and a kennel on my property.

Breeder-Reported Testing
Excellent level
Cedarwood K9's & Kats reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for German Shepherds.
Hip Dysplasia (Preliminary), Hip Dysplasia
Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.
Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.
Temperament Test
A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.
Degenerative Myelopathy (DM; SOD1A)
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
