Meet the breeder

I'm Maurene and Jeff B., the breeder behind Collegiate Bassets and Rheign Collies located in Morocco, IN. Our Basset Hound journey started 15 years ago with our very first Basset Hound, Stanford. Now, after 15 years, we strive to offer the best possible companions with a focus on temperament, intelligence, health, workability, and sound structure. Our Collie journey started in 2005 with our first collie, Lov’e. She truly set the standard for what a collie should be. We raise one litter of collies a year and one litter of basset hounds. Our goal is to consistently produce puppies/dogs who have the potential to be service dogs for autistic/disabled children. All of our dogs are registered with the American Kennel Club. We're passionate about raising well-rounded pups who will excel in any venue with their new families. We take extreme pride in our pups. We live on a small hobby farm in Northwest Indiana and all of our pups come with a lifetime of support from our family. Maurene is the Treasurer for Paw Power Blues Dog Club and is on the Board of Directors for the Northeast Ohio Collie Rescue.

Q. & A. with Maurene and Jeff

  • Why did you start breeding?

Maurene's dad was an avid hunter and field trialer when she was a kid. She used to help him with the Beagle puppies growing up. Her father moved into German Shepherds about 16 years ago and raises and trains working-line GSDs. She helps with the whelping and raising of his puppies. After meeting Stanford for the first time, she was hooked and our Basset Hound journey began.
  • What makes your program special?

Due to having an autistic son, our focus is to constantly produce puppies that have the potential to be service dogs for children with special needs. It’s a passion of ours to help these families because we understand how important a good service dog can be.
  • What are the different breed coat types in your program?

Collie puppies have rough coats. Coat types may vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Collie puppies include black white and tan, blue merle and white, and sable and white. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

I have had nothing but an overall wonderful experience with both Jeff and Maurene. I made the difficult decision, for the first time in 34 years, to purchase a Collie puppy from Rheign Collies, rather than adopt from a local rescue. What a seamless, informative, and amazing experience this has been! Maurene responded to my inquiry regarding the purchase of Soren, (then a three month old male Collie from a recent litter) within two hours of my post. She then followed up with a quick phone call, reaching out with additional feedback. I completed the adoption application, and after receiving two additional videos of Soren, he is now enjoying his forever home with me. I cannot speak highly enough of Maurene and the ease of transitioning Soren from her attentive care to my own. Soren is a once-in-a-lifetime dog! I feel so blessed to have found him! I would highly recommend anyone looking for a purebred, healthy, well socialized, and well mannered puppy to support Collegiate Bassets and Rheign Collies!

Maurene and Jeff are by far the best breeders my wife and I have ever experienced. The communication was amazing and the knowledge of the breed was second to none. We bought Merlin from them in January 2024. He was 9 months at the time and just an amazing dog. In August Maurene let me know they had puppies. We bought Willow. Because I’m in Southern California I flew to Chicago to pick up the puppy. They went as far to pick me up at my hotel and take me to the airport. How many breeders would do that. These 2 are just amazing people and you will not be disappointed if you bought a dog from them. Thank you so much Maurene and Jeff.

I had a wonderful experience working with Maurene and Jeff from Collegiate Bassets and Rhein Collies. They provided detailed information about their puppies (and the parents) health and personalities. I reached out with a few questions and Maureen was so kind and helpful. She and Jeff even met me halfway which saved me significant driving time when picking up my puppy. Our sweet collie puppy is loving, goofy, easy going and so smart. It’s clear he’s been socialized with love. We’re thrilled with our sweet puppy and so happy to know such a wonderful breeder!
