Meet the breeder

I'm Barbara G., the breeder behind Cottonwood Kennel located in Dallas, GA. I have been involved with German shepherds all my life. Growing up with them on the farm. I started training when I was young. I started competing as a young adult. I have had wonderful mentors to teach me and I still reach out to them. My dogs live in my home . Not in kennels. I ask for a interview from each person interested in a puppy.

Q. & A. with Barbara

  • Why did you start breeding?

I wanted to raise a puppy out of my show dog to keep and show. I found a mentor to help me pick out the right dog to match my program. I breed for intelligence and health. I breed my first litter in 1986
  • What makes your program special?

My dogs are my pets. They are raised in my home and their puppies are born in my home, seeing and hearing all around them. They are started on potty training in the whelping box which is a box big enough and divided so one side they can go potty. When they are old enough after they have been vaccinated with their first shots, they get play time outside. They learn how to go up and down steps and play on obstacles.
  • What are the different breed coat types in your program?

Our puppies have long coats. Coat types may vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies include black and red and bi-color. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

Excellent level

Cottonwood Kennel reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for German Shepherds.

  • Hip Dysplasia

Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.

  • Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)

Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.

  • Temperament Test

A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.

  • DNA Disease Panel, Degenerative Myelopathy (DM; SOD1A)

Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).

We are so thankful to Mrs. Guzzo for our sweet German Shepherd puppy. Her dogs are absolutely beautiful, healthy, and raised with so much love. Bringing home our sweet Luke has been one of the greatest joys of our lives. He's beautiful but also gentle, intelligent, and full of personality. It feels like we didn't just get a pet -we gained a new best friend, a beloved family member. Thank you, Miss Barbara, for raising such incredible dogs and for trusting us with one of your precious pups. You've given us a gift that will bring love, funny moments and lots of joy into our family. ↓

Barbara was the most helpful, involved, and kind breeder me and my family have ever worked with. She truly cares about the health and development of each of her puppies and sets up her puppies new owners extremely well. Since picking up my puppy, Carbon, he has been extremely well behaved and trained! It is clear that Barbara devoted a great deal of time and energy to raising the puppies in a great environment. I couldn’t recommend Barbara more.

Barbara - Just to let you know: Duke had no separation problems, slept all night 1st night, eats everything in sight, well adopted by 5 year old female GSD, is around 25 pounds, pretty well potty trained, comes when called, and has 3/4 ears at this point. No problems. Thanks for raising a good puppy!
