I'm Dawn V., the breeder behind Dawnhill located in Allendale, MI. My breeding program has produced National Winners, Performance Award of Merit and Health Award of Merit recipients. My breeding dogs are OFA hips/elbows/cardiac/thyroid/eyes/DM/MDR1 and have temperament certificates. I've titled dogs in conformation, agility, rally, obedience, tracking & scent work.

Why did you start breeding?
In 1973, at 13 years old I started working for a German Shepherd Dog Kennel. I acquired my foundation brood bitch from the kennel owner, who produced healthy, sound dogs. She influenced my desire to improve the breed. We don't need more dogs, we need better dogs. My current dogs can be traced all the way back to my first GSD, I-Ken-El's Sweet Gypsy Rose CD.What makes your program special?
I am that rare breeder that not only focuses on producing dogs that can win in the show ring, but can also live a wonderful life as a family pet. My goal is to produce sound, healthy dogs who are beautiful and easy to train and live with. I've bred Select Excellent Champions, but almost all of my puppies are placed with families as pets or performance dogs. I utilize offa.org to study pedigrees and select the best possible stud dogs.Where do your breeding dogs live?

Hip Dysplasia
Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.
Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)
Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.
Eye Certification (CAER, registered with OFA)
Eye testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide range of hereditary eye illnesses including retinal dysplasia, lens luxation, and glaucoma, which can cause impared vision or blindness.
Cardiac Evaluation (registered with OFA)
Heart testing reduces the chance of passing down congenital heart disease, which can cause a range of symptoms ranging from trouble exercising to heart failure.
Thyroid (Autoimmune Thyroiditis, registered with OFA), Canine Good Citizen (CGC), Temperament Test
A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.
Multiple Drug Sensitivity (MDR1), Degenerative Myelopathy (DM; SOD1A)
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
