Meet the breeder

I'm Jonathan P., the breeder behind Down East Setters located in East Bloomfield, NY. Down East Setters is dedicated exclusively to Irish Setters, prioritizing health, temperament, sound structure, and natural ability. Through thoughtful breeding choices and individual care, my goal is to preserve the qualities that make this remarkable breed so special.

Q. & A. with Jonathan

  • Why did you start breeding?

For me, breeding is about much more than producing puppies. It's about preserving a breed I love and working toward the kind of Irish Setter that represents everything I value about these dogs. I believe responsible breeding requires a long-term commitment to health, temperament, structure, and the qualities that make the Irish Setter special. Every breeding should have a purpose, with careful consideration given to the strengths and weaknesses of each dog and how a pairing can contribute to the next generation. My goal is not simply to produce the next litter, but to leave the breed a little better than I found it while ensuring the dogs I bring into the world have the best possible foundation for a healthy, fulfilling life.
  • What makes your program special?

I believe the Irish Setter should be appreciated as a complete dog, combining breed type and sound structure with intelligence, temperament, athleticism, and natural ability. I approach each breeding with careful consideration of pedigrees, genetic health, conformation, temperament, and the qualities each individual dog can contribute. My goal is to produce Irish Setters that are not only beautiful representatives of their breed, but also capable, versatile dogs with the temperament and ability to thrive as companions and participate in the activities for which they were bred. Puppies are raised with individual attention, early socialization, and the care needed to give them a strong start in life. I believe the responsibility of a breeder extends well beyond placement, and I value honest relationships with puppy families who share my respect for the breed. Ultimately, my program is guided by a commitment to thoughtful breeding, continual improvement, and the long-term well-being of the Irish Setter.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies include red, chestnut, and mahogany. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

Jonathan has been certified by Good Dog’s screening team for responsible and trusted breeding practices. When you’re ready, reach out to ask about the puppies or anything else on your mind. You’ll get to know each other through messaging, phone, or video and pay securely, all on Good Dog.

Jonathan partners with buyers to find the best match as the puppies develop and their personalities take shape. Typically, matches are finalized when the puppies reach about 7 weeks old.

“Irish Setters have a wide range of energy levels and personalities. We try to wait until their individual personalities start to develop and choose the puppy that best suits the home and lifestyle you are providing. You are always included in the decision making process however we spend 24/7 with these puppies are know their individual personalities best, choosing a puppy based on their looks alone in our opinion is unethical and pointless because at this age their looks are changing weekly.”

Puppy prices include a $450 non-refundable deposit that secures a spot in a litter. The remaining $2,050 - $3,050 is due before pickup, plus applicable taxes and fees.

After losing our 9 year old Irish Setter, we found Jonathans pups on Good Dog. He was extremely responsive, patient with our questions and even traveled over 300+ miles to meet us to make the pick up convenient. Great experience and Jonathan was a pleasure. The pup was beautiful and is now adjusting well in his forever home.

Jonathan thank you so much for all that you did to make me feel comfortable on making a very big decision of adding a new member to our family. You were very passionate of the breed which I have loved for many years. After the loss of my beloved setter two and half years ago Jonathan was instrumental in showing me I could have that love again. He helped me through the process and was there every step of the way. We are very happy with our new little one

Jonathan was very responsive with all of my crazy questions. He sent regular updates of the pups and videos. We drove from Ohio to pick her up and fell in love the second I picked her up in my arms. The parents were on site and they were absolutely beautiful. I can't say enough...
