I'm Dr. Grace M., the breeder behind Firewalker Australian Terriers located in Gloucester, VA. Bred for quality. Champion bloodline puppies, Health-tested CHIC parents bred to produce puppies with the AKC Australian Terrier Breed Standard in mind. Bred for temperament. Our parents are pets first – intelligent with a terrier's drive for fun and activity but ready for a cuddle at the end of the day. Raised with Love. Puppies are raised with daily hands-on socialization. They are introduced to many sights, sounds, and textures before they go to their new homes at 12 weeks old.
Q. & A. with Dr. Grace
Why did you start breeding?
Growing up in the South Pacific, my family had and bred Australian Silky Terriers. After moving out on my own, I spent a lot of time riding and naturally obtained an Australian Shepherd. Then I discovered showing, conformation, herding, agility and obedience and bred a couple litters. During this time I was introduced to the Australian Terrier, a breed that was smaller and shed very litter, like the dogs of my youth, but could still keep up with my very active lifestyle. Over 20 years and many litters later, they are the ONLY breed for me!
What makes your program special?
I am a preservation Australian Terrier breeder and and AKC Breeder of Merit. I also attend several webinar and workshops each year and participate in the AKC Bred with H.E.A.R.T program. I breed an occasional litter (~1/year). We health test the parents for the breed recommended CHIC tests before breeding and have started doing genetic health tests with EMBARK. I perform ENS and Early Scent Introduction with the puppies until 16 days old and introduce them to many experiences following the Puppy Culture program. As a member of good standing in the Australian Terrier Club of America (ATCA), AKC's national breed club since 2005, I am very active in the breed club: serving as president for the last 5 years and on the board of directors for many additional years, serving on the sustainability committee, contributing as the columnist for the quarterly breed column in the AKC Gazette and editor of the yearly ATCA calendar. Our dogs are owner-handled in AKC conformation shows, including National and Regional Specialties held by the ATCA. Puppies we have bred have been very successful in performance and companion competitions.
What are the different breed coat colors in your program?
Our puppies include red and blue and tan. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.
