I'm Natalie I., the breeder behind Genesis Sighthounds located in Phoenix, AZ. Genesis Sighthounds (GSH) is a preservation breeder committed to producing healthy Basenjis bred to the standard for conformation, type, and movement. Our breeding program also puts special emphasis on breeding for temperament, as we strive to produce happy and well-rounded Basenji companions.
Q. & A. with Natalie
Why did you start breeding?
Upon receiving my foundation bitch, Bea, from my mentor, Jenifer Sealy (Steadfast Farm Basenjis), I quickly discovered my passion and love for purposefully bred, purebred dogs. As a preservation breeder, it is my goal to preserve the Basenji breed by breeding based on conformation, movement, health, and temperament.
What makes your program special?
We follow Puppy Culture protocols when raising our litters to ensure our puppies are confident and happy. We believe that socialization for Basenji puppies is very important for ensuring they become well-rounded, good-tempered adults. Additionally, we health test all of our Basenjis, and make these results publicly available.
What are the different breed coat colors in your program?
Our puppies include black tan and white, red and white, brindle and white, and black and white. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.

About Bea
Bea is an exceptional Basenji bred by Jenifer Sealy (Steadfast Farm; SFF) and Brenda Cassell (Signet Kennels). She has excelled in conformation (Grand Champion Bronze) and lure coursing (Field Champion; Dual Champion; Best in Field winner), as well as other fun activities such as tricks and FastCATs. She has an amazing temperament and has never met a person she doesn't love! She is the "genesis" and foundation of our kennel and I couldn't ask for a better girl to have in our breeding program.

Breeder-Reported Testing
Excellent level
Genesis Sighthounds reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Basenjis.
Hip Dysplasia
Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.
Eye Certification (CAER, registered with OFA)
Eye testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide range of hereditary eye illnesses including retinal dysplasia, lens luxation, and glaucoma, which can cause impared vision or blindness.
Thyroid (Autoimmune Thyroiditis, registered with OFA)
A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.
Fanconi Syndrome, PRA, Basenji Type
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
