I'm Shana S., the breeder behind Haus Der Herzenskrieger located in Mt. Sterling, KY. I'm a hobby breeder of AKC registered German Shepherds. My dogs are health tested per OFA and SV guidelines. I focus on producing and raising happy, mentally stable, healthy pups that make great companions for any home. Let me help you find your next best friend!
Q. & A. with Shana
Why did you start breeding?
My parents had a shepherd when I was born, and we became best friends. I've had a shepherd most of my life and to me they truly are the best breed. I want to do my part and responsibly breed healthy, well-rounded pups to make great companions. But mostly I want to share my passion for German Shepherds with those who love the breed just as much as I do!
What makes your program special?
The health and temperament of my puppies are my number one priority. I strive to produce puppies that can go anywhere and do anything with the family. I am very picky about who gets my puppies and endeavor to ensure that each one goes to the best home possible, and I offer support for life. I love what I do and truly want the very best for my puppies and their forever families.
What are the different breed coat types in your program?
Our puppies have stock coats. Coat types may vary depending on the parent dogs.
What are the different breed coat colors in your program?
Our puppies include sable, black, bi-color, and black and tan. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.

Lady, mom
German Shepherd
About Lady
Lady displays good handler engagement. She is eager and willing to work. She has a medium energy level, medium drives, settles very well in the house and/or crate and enjoys doing whatever her human is doing. Lady is an all-around fun dog with a goof ball personality at times. She lives with other dogs in my home or kennel.
She is intelligent and easily trained with a stable, safe to take anywhere temperament. She is dog selective and will resource guard from other dogs if allowed. These are both easily managed.
Lady is a first generation born stateside. Her Dad was imported from Poland and is now back in Germany at a Police Kennel. Her Mom was imported from Slovakia and is a PPD. She is a stock coat sable carrying black with tan points.
Valka, mom
German Shepherd
About Valka
Valka is my sweetheart, very gentle, attentive, intelligent, and beautiful girl (might be biased). She is naturally territorial of her home and of me. She wants to be wherever I am no matter what I am doing. She is an excellent house dog but also does great hanging outside for hours on end. I feel very safe having her around. She loves to go places with me and has always gotten compliments on how calm and well-mannered she is while we are out.
She has a high prey drive and medium food drive. Butterflies are her arch enemy, and she could chase them all day. Valka can be intensely focused and constantly on the go when she's on the hunt but has a really nice off switch making her an awesome house dog. She can be left out unattended for hours on end and I know she won't destroy anything. Except squeaky toys, she is very driven to destroy all squeakers.
Valka is a black and tan blanket back with intermediate red pigmentation. She also carries recessive black. She is stock coat and only carries stock coat. She is a larger female with large bone structure.

Breeder-Reported Testing
Great level
Haus Der Herzenskrieger reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for German Shepherds.
Hip Dysplasia
Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.
Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)
Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.
Brucellosis
A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.
Full Embark Panel
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
