Meet the breeder

I'm Pauline P., the breeder behind Hearts Companions located in Lebanon, MO. At Hearts Companions, our goal is to raise intelligent, confident, and deeply bonded American Hairless Terriers who bring joy and partnership to their families. Located in the Ozark hills of Lebanon, Missouri, we focus on sound structure, stable temperaments, and thoughtful early development from day one. Our puppies are raised in our home through a fragrance-free, chemical-free environment to protect their sensitive skin and health. Each litter experiences Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) and Early Scent Introduction (ESI) to build strong, resilient minds. They’re also gently exposed to farm life—goats, pigs, geese, and chickens—to ensure they grow up calm, confident, and adaptable. We introduce early training foundations including crate manners, travel comfort, basic scent work (birch & anise), gluten experience, and barn-hunt play. When weather allows, puppies enjoy water play to build confidence for dock diving, as well as early exposure to tracking and flyball tugging for fun and enrichment. Every Hearts Companions puppy is raised with individual attention, daily handling, and the goal of becoming a joyful, lifelong companion. Whether destined for sport, therapy, or simply the heart of a family, our dogs embody the intelligence, loyalty, and sparkle that make the American Hairless Terrier so special.

Q. & A. with Pauline

  • What makes your program special?

We participate in early neurological stimulation and we work with each of them on socialization and environmental experiences. Touch, sounds, scents, multiple locations, etc. Traveling, crate training, visiting loud places and also visiting places where there are lots of people. Our pups are positively socialized with people from toddlers to elderly. We also provide positive canine socializing with dogs from 4 pounds to 95 pounds. The pups live with us, in a fragrance free home where they are never exposed to fragrance or chemicals. Our pups see the vet for puppy checks and are kept up to date on shots and dewormer. Through our veterinarian, we provide a health certificate so you know that your puppy is coming to your family healthy and free of issues. AHT's are the most hypoallergenic dog that we have ever found! They are smart, faithful, amazing little companions. ADULTS INFO... All parent dogs have gotten embark DNA complete health panels. The parents have also had their serum bile acid testing. Adults have their OFA xrays for hips and elbows, patella, heart and our last step is to get their hearing tests completed. Ours also have their DNA done by UC Davis as we were part of the AHT genetic diversity study.
  • What are the different breed coat types in your program?

Our puppies have hairless coats. Coat types may vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies include lemon and white, blue tan and white, lilac dilute, apricot, black and tan, and black tan and white. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

They live in my home and guardian homes.

My interest in the AHT's sparked very suddenly after doing research on hypoallergenic dogs. Despite all the options, the AHT was the first to catch my eye, and I honestly found it fascinating! Upon further research, Hearts Companion ended up being the first AHT breeder I came in contact with! I ended up adopting Cranberry, who's now named Halo! Paula was very kind and responsive to questions I had for her! Almost a year later, Halo has grown and been with me through many adventures, from the stress of school, and the chaos of the Holidays. I love this breed so much and how easy they are to care for. I look forward to seeing the rest of the work Paula does with these bald babies!
