I'm Shelley H., the breeder behind Hilliards Basset Hound Buddies located in Abilene, TX. We have been owned by Bassets for the last 20+ years but have been breeding them since 2019. All of our Bassets are AKC registered with one of our Bassets, Charlie Boy Lee Hilliard CGC TKN, being UKC registered as well. I do compete in AKC and UKC shows.
Q. & A. with Shelley
Why did you start breeding?
We got into breeding because we love Bassets and want to ensure healthy puppies go to good, loving homes. We want other families to enjoy the love and companionship of a Basset. There really is no love like the love of a Basset. Their eyes, personalities, loyalty, goofy & quirky traits and pure, unconditional l love is something everyone should experience.
What makes your program special?
My dad was a Vietnam Veteran who dealt with PTSD & various medical issues due to his time in Vietnam. He fiercely loved my mom & when she passed away, he took care of her dog Sandy. Although Sandy wasn't a Basset, she was one of the reasons my dad got up every morning & continued to live. We want to pass that type of love & dedication to someone else like my dad so they can enjoy a bright spot.
What are the different breed coat colors in your program?
Our puppies include brown black and white, red and white, and black brown and white. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.
