I'm Megan C., the breeder behind Invictus Leonbergers located in Bellingham, MA. We value form/function AND TEMPERAMENT. As a temperament breed, we really value keeping the friendliness/stable mentality in our dogs, and to create Leonbergers that are bred to the standard, with great movement and health. It's important to us that we put our best foot forward with every dog.
Q. & A. with Megan
Why did you start breeding?
My love for it started with my horse. He is a Canadian Horse (endangered breed), and with him, we did lots of breed ambassador work. Preservation breeding was a huge topic there. Without any good breeders, a breed can suffer greatly. I also worked for a Boxer breeder when I was younger. It’s always been important to me to advocate for ethical breeding. I haven't looked back since.
What makes your program special?
My willingness to be open-minded, constantly wanting to learn, sticks out. I would like to think I’m thorough. I value type/temperament/correctness to the breed standard. And I don't care if I stand alone; I know that I have the breed's best interest in mind, and that's what matters.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.

About Nike
Nike is a sweet girl with a work ethic to match. She has a strong topline, beautiful movement, a wonderful rear assembly, and more. This girl is my show dog, performance dog, and service dog. Showcasing as much versatility as she can is one of her favorite things. She is 33inches at the hip AND shoulder (even; we like that!), and has a gorgeous topline. It's sturdy and consistent. She has many achievements, including her Versatile Leonberger Award, given by the breed club! Her puppies will go in any direction; I like that about her a lot.

Breeder-Reported Testing
Excellent level
Invictus Leonbergers reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Leonbergers.
Hip Dysplasia
Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.
Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)
Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.
Eye Certification (CAER, registered with OFA)
Eye testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide range of hereditary eye illnesses including retinal dysplasia, lens luxation, and glaucoma, which can cause impared vision or blindness.
Cardiac Evaluation (registered with OFA)
Heart testing reduces the chance of passing down congenital heart disease, which can cause a range of symptoms ranging from trouble exercising to heart failure.
Brucellosis, Thyroid (Autoimmune Thyroiditis, registered with OFA)
A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.
Degenerative Myelopathy (DM; SOD1A), DNA Disease Panel, Polyneuropathy 3, Leonberger and Saint Bernard Type, Leukoencephalomyelopathy (LEMP), Polyneuropathy 2, Leonberger and Saint Bernard Type, Polyneuropathy 1, Leonberger and Saint Bernard Type
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
