I'm Jill S., the breeder behind Jill Stahl Tyler located in Brattleboro, VT. We firmly believe that a dog’s personality is hugely important. We breed for an outgoing, friendly dog that is not fearful. Berners are known for being very attached to “their people,” often one specific family member. They usually greet someone new and then just relax.
OUR WORK IN GIVING THESE PUPPIES A GOOD START
Our dogs live with us, in our house, and we treat them as members of the family. We have given the puppies the same sort of attention, so that they will be ready to meld right into your household, too.
We have given each of our pups the best possible care in the first eight weeks of his or her life. Beyond all the testing that went into the parents, we have worked hard to start them out right with daily early neurological stimulation, near constant supervision, attention and interaction, de-worming, shots, vet check and more.
Q. & A. with Jill
Why did you start breeding?
Mom Riley goes to "work" at a program for traumatized children, where she is greatly loved. Watching her enjoying this role made it clear to us that she was the type to breed. Riley has passed her hip, elbow and eye tests; her family history does not carry the DM genetic markers.
What makes your program special?
We want to breed a limited amount of puppies who better the breed--both in their genetics and in their personalities. We keep them in our own home, making sure they are socialized and attached to humans right from the very beginning.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.

Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.
Eye Certification (CAER, registered with OFA)
Eye testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide range of hereditary eye illnesses including retinal dysplasia, lens luxation, and glaucoma, which can cause impared vision or blindness.
Cardiac Evaluation (rDVM, not registered with OFA)
Heart testing reduces the chance of passing down congenital heart disease, which can cause a range of symptoms ranging from trouble exercising to heart failure.
Degenerative Myelopathy (DM; SOD1B), Bernese Mountain Dog Type, Degenerative Myelopathy (DM; SOD1A), von Willebrand Disease I (vWD I)
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
